It sounds like a weird combo, but this old-meets-new trend combines effortless and chic, in way you’ve never seen before. Or if you’re a 90s girl, maybe you have. Flash back to the era of Kate Moss and Beverly Hills 90210 (the original 90210) where grunge style really took off, teens were regularly spotted wearing a flannel, or chambray button-down, tied around their waist. This year, the trend has been taken to a whole other level, but you don’t even need to break the bank for this rocker-athletic look, a la Khloe Kardashian and Hilary Duff.
All you need is your coveted black leggings, a fun pair of Nikes or tennis shoes, and a button-down. Tie the button-down around your waist, resting on your hipbones, so that the shirt stays in place. The more oversized the flannel, the better since the baggy look accentuates your waist and legs. To complete the look, add your favorite graphic-tee and a pair of aviators. It’s comfy for class and perfect for stopping at the SERF on your way home. Just throw a workout tee and sports bra in your backpack, and you’re ready to go! A look that’s stylish, comfy, and convenient? Count us in.
Another surprising, recycled trend we’ve spotted both on and off the runway is the controversial white after Labor Day. Originating around the 1950s, it became a fashion sin to wear white after Labor Day. Ever so surely, however, white has been making its comeback year-round. In fact, this year’s New York Fashion Week gave us the okay both on and off the runway. Designers like 3.1 Phillip Lim, Victoria Beckham, and more took no shame in dressing models in bright white shirt-dresses and sophisticated trench coats.
HerCampus fashion icon Rihanna wore a white baby-doll dress and white lace-up pumps to Adam Selman’s Spring 2015 Presentation. Plus, since Fashion Police’s Joan Rivers isn’t on the lookout for white after Labor Day offenders (may she RIP), you can rest easy sporting the look.
Models may have been rocking all-white ensembles on the runway, but you don’t want to overdo it. The key is to stick with just one piece of white, mixing it with other fall tones, like mustard-yellow, maroon, and dark teal.
I love a loose, collarless white blouse paired with ripped black skinnies, a scarf, and booties for the fall. Another way to keep your white ensemble from looking resort-ready is adding fall staples like dark tights, knee socks, beanies, faux-fur, or cheetah print. Dark denim and leather jackets also help the white from looking too summery.
So bring out your winter-whites, because white is officially here to stay (let’s just hope the snow won’t be).
