Freakfest: Expectations vs. Reality

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

You’ve heard about it from friends, articles online claiming it to be one of the best college Halloween celebrations, alumni and maybe even some family. It’s Freakfest; and as a young, eager freshman you are counting down the days. But, stop right now because it might not be everything you think…

Alright, you bought your ticket and you’re starting to plan your costume.

Expectation #1: It is the most important night of Halloweekend, I must wear the cutest costume.

Reality: Wrong. It’s not the most important night of the weekend, and you should probably wear your warmest, not cutest costume. Take it from the girl who thought it was okay to wear heels and a mere flannel in a lame attempt at being a cowgirl freshman year. It was miserable.

Expectation #2:  It’s going to be one huge party.

Reality: Wrong. Everything you heard about it being utter madness is correct, but it’s not exactly your typical party. There are thousands of people on State Street just trying to get to the different stages. No one’s really dancing. It’s a whole lot of walking around, standing and being confused.

Expectation #3: I’m going to see the headlining performer.

Reality: Wrong. Unless you plan on getting to Freakfest ridiculously early, you’re probably going to end up in the back of a huge crowd, maybe catching a glimpse of Chiddy Bang’s head (taken from actual experience).

Expectation #4: I should totally pregame.

Reality: Wrong. Freakfest is probably more enjoyed by those sober. With a high risk of getting separated by your friends or lost, it’s important to stay alert. Besides, there are cops EVERYWHERE and you’re going to want to remember all of the crazy costumes people wear.

Expectation #5: I’m going to see ALL of my friends.

Reality: Wrong. Plan on going with the people you want to see, because it’s extremely difficult meeting up with other friends, and even harder to find them in the masses of drunken college students.

But, with that being said, it is still a great time and an event you’re never going to forget. Just be prepared, and dress warm. Leave your hot costume for another night, and maybe try wearing a onesie to Freakfest this year?  Trust me, you won’t regret it.
