11 Reasons Why Sam Smith Should Be Your New #1

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

As if we needed another reason to love the Brits, Sam Smith sweeps us lowly peasants off our feet before we even knew what hit us. Coming out of seemingly nowhere, this British singer has erupted into the music scene with unstoppable momentum. Whether you’re looking for a beautifully written love song or just a voice that’ll make your ears smile (it’s a thing) then search no further. I’ve found you your next obsession.

1. He went from 0 to 100, real quick.

At 22 years old, Smith has a #1 album. If that doesn’t make you feel incompetent, I don’t know what will. With his feature on Disclosure’s “Latch,” he quickly made himself a name in the game. Shortly after, his debut album In The Lonely Hour released in May of 2014 and now he’s here to stay.

2. He’s has #squadgoals

Don’t mind me sitting on the couch crying over your music videos while you party with Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake. No, I’m fine. I swear. Don’t look at me.

3. He’s humble and very, very thankful for his success.

Talk about shaking off the haters. Bow down to King Sam Smith.

4. He won FOUR Grammys this year. FOUR.

After winning Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album, Smith is clearly slaying the scene. Beating out nominees like alums Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, and Katy Perry, you don’t need much more validation to know you’re the next big thing.

5. He’s 100% true to himself.

One of his Grammy speeches: “I just want to say before I made this record I was doing everything to try and get my music heard… I tried to lose weight, and I was making awful music. It was only until I started to be myself that the music started to flow and people started to listen. So thank you guys for accepting me for being just me.” Need I say more?

6. He’s a lyrical genius.

I ask myself that everyday Sam, everyday.

7. He self-identifies as a feminist.

Because he believes in equal rights, period.

8. His covers are better than the original.

Tracy Chapman, I love you and I’ma let you finish. But Sam Smith sang your song SO WELL.

9. He’s a spokesperson for everyone: Straight, gay, bisexual, everything.

On an appearance with Ellen, Smith explained his struggle with being limited to one cause. He believes you don’t need to talk about it, it’s just who you are. Smith “came out” as gay before his album release but jokes he knew who he was at age four.

10. He has his priorities straight.

Don’t we all sometimes?

11. HAVE YOU HEARD THIS BEAUTIFUL HUMAN’S VOICE!?

Cheers to you Sam, you’ve made this world a better place.
