Hurricane Harvey: How You Can Help

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

Hurricane Harvey made landfall northeast of Corpus Christi, Texas on the morning of August 25. Clocking in at winds of 130 miles per hour, this Category 4 storm has left at least eight dead, several injured, and many more left with nothing. It is in times such as this when we need to come together and help out our fellow human. So here are ways you can help.

Donate money

Visit the webpages of the Red Cross or the Salvation Army to make a monetary donation. Any amount can help.

If you are in Texas, donate blood

Over 2,000 units of blood is needed for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. The biggest need is for O positive and O negative.

Donate food and clothing

Many local organizations are accepting food and clothing donations for victims. Many Texas organizations have an address you can mail your donations to.

Help with clean up if you are local

Austin Disaster Relief Network is asking for toiletries, inflatable mattresses, undergarments, and cleaning tools. They can be dropped off at the Hope Family Thrift Store in Austin. Volunteers can also sign up for cleaning efforts there.

Run a local fundraiser

You can run a fundraiser for money or clothing/food at your church, school, club/organization, etc. It’s so easy to do.

Keep the victims of this natural disaster in your thoughts, Collegiettes!
