The First Time I Watched ‘The Notebook’

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

There are some movies out there that people just assume everyone has seen.

One of those movies seems to be ‘The Notebook‘. This is a movie based on the book written by Nicholas Sparks. If me mentioning of the name Nicholas Sparks didn’t make you immediately think of a sappy love story then I don’t know what will.

Everyone would talk to me about the movie as if I had seen it a thousand times and have the entire script memorized. — Oddly enough, a lot of people do.

Of course me, being the most basic college girl, I felt that it was necessary to take it upon myself to be able to relate to what everyone else had been raving on and on about. So one night I decided that it was now or never. I forced one of best friends to sit on the couch and watch this movie with me. As I should have expected she had already seen the movie many times before and could quote almost all of it.

As the movie began I realized that hearing everyone talk about certain scenes and seeing memes all over the internet had given me preconceived notions for what the movie was going to be like. As the movie started I noticed that it was very different what I had anticipated. I realized that the only basis I really had for the story was the Allie and Noah end up falling in love. I never really knew how they met or the background behind their love story. Now that I do know and I understand why it does get brought up a lot…it is very complicated.

After watching The Notebook I have learned a lot about love. As cliche as this sounds this movie taught me that love is by no means going to be perfect. It is not going to be easy but in the end it will always be worth it. So if you need a good reminder of that or you want to cry over how cute Noah and Allie’s love is then I would one hundred percent recommend this movie. It will make you laugh, cry, and smile the whole way through.
