All of the Emotions of MLB Opening Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. No, not Christmas time….

It’s baseball season.

I’ve been counting down the days since November 2nd when the Chicago Cubs clinched their first World Series victory in 108 years. April 2nd and 3rd. Opening Day. For me, it’s like Christmas morning. I am a die hard New York Mets fan and through both the good times and the bad, I’ve been loyal. And now that we’re good–like really good–I get that much more excited for the season to start. I start to feel a wide range of emotions on Opening Day. I’m sure some of you fellow baseball fanatics can relate!

Excited.

It’s equivalent to falling asleep on Christmas Eve…you don’t. Who can sleep when tomorrow is game 1 of 162??

Hopeful.

It’s the start of a new season. Everybody’s in last and everybody’s in first. There’s no worst or best.

Nervous.

It’s nerve-wracking. Nobody wants to start the season off with a loss.

Anger & Disappointment.

So, your team blew a 3-1 lead or got killed 14-3. You lose all hope for the next 161 games left on the schedule.

Joy.

Or better yet, your team wins. Whether they win by 1 or 100, a win is a win. And you’re now under the impression that they’re going undefeated for the rest of the season!

Sadness.

For whatever reason, teams don’t play the day after Opening Day. So the MLB is a tease. You get one day of baseball and then you have to wait an entire 24 hours for more baseball.

Happiness.

Despite all of the ups and downs baseball season may bring, fans feel happiness. Nothing beats overpriced ballpark food, singing “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” entirely out of tune with thousands of people during the 7th inning stretch, doing “the wave” and cheering on your favorite baseball boys. The atmosphere is different on Opening Day. The fans cheer louder and the guys play harder. The excitement and joy is contagious. It’s a new season with endless possibilities.

So ladies, I highly encourage you to get out and catch a baseball game this season. Whether you go because you’re a big fan or you’re just into cute boys in tight baseball pants, it’s a great way to relax and have some fun this summer!
