Why I Love My Small Family

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

The topic of families is a common one. Maybe it’s because of the funny stories (which are most likely about our siblings(s)) or the traditions that we have, but we like to talk about our family.

When I talk about my extended family, people are always surprised by this one simple fact: I have four cousins, two on both sides. For some reason, people are just perplexed by this (maybe it’s because they usually have over 10 cousins). And when I tell them that my brother and I are the only cousins to the two cousins on my dad’s side, their jaw just about drops to the floor.

Now, don’t feel bad for me because of my “small” number of cousins or that I only have one sibling — I love my family as the size it is, and here is why:

  1. Get-togethers are (relatively) easy.

Trying to get 30 or 50 people (or more) together on one side or both can be a nightmare (at least what I think), so you only need to find a time that works for just over 20 people (both sides together) and that makes it easier for everyone.

  1. My cousins, my brother and I are all about the same age.

Having cousins that are around the same age as you is an amazing thing. They just get you. And the best part? If they are older, they have already gone through what you are going through, so they become like a big sister/brother to you (if you are the oldest of your siblings) that you can count on for advice.

  1. You can get together just about anywhere.

When we celebrate holidays, each of the families (separately) can fit in one house (and the parking isn’t too bad). Going out to eat? The max can be around 10ish, so waiting for a table(s) isn’t too terrible if you did not make a reservation.

  1. News doesn’t stay secret for long.

Whether is be good or bad, it doesn’t take long for the whole family to know, and family can make it better or easier whatever the news may be.

These are just some of the top reasons why I love my small family. And even though we are all growing up and our family is growing (slowly but surely), there is no way I’d trade my (sometimes crazy) family for anyone else.
