It’s Personal: Stay Home Because You’re Well Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

Taking on the lam. Flying the coop. Playing hooky. And my personal favorite from my dad used in instances of being healthy and uninterested in going to a boring event, “I’m too well to attend.”

These are just some of the many phrases used to describe a person who wants a short reprieve from school, work, or the world in general. It’s a totally normal and encouraged event to reboot after a stressful time or just to get more in touch with yourself. So as November 30th approaches, take pride in observing “Stay Home Because You’re Well Day” and maybe find some inspiration on this list about how to spend the free time!

Read a book!

I consider myself a pretty voracious reader, but my love for flipping pages and immersing myself in a story has gotten lost through sections upon sections of textbooks. There are many people, like myself, that compulsively buy books that sit abandoned on their bedside table in anticipation of stumbling across the time to read them – today’s the day! If you don’t have a stack of books, part of the fun of this activity could also be the hunt for the perfect bookstore with that indescribable worn-in book smell that is adored by bookworms everywhere and a cozy little nook to enjoy your book.

Go for a walk!

One of my favorite parts of college is knowing that I’m within a half mile of some of the most beautiful hiking trails and overlooks in almost every direction. Although you might have to bundle up, clearing your head of all thoughts by taking in the scenery coupled with the breath of fresh air (literally) will be sure to put a spring in your step! Or, if talking to someone else rids the stress, stop at Mugby for a cup of coffee and take a stroll with a friend.

Organize your closet!

I love the transition of seasons because it means remembering favorite articles of clothing that used to be packed away… that is, unless you can’t see the clothes shoved in the deep recesses of the closet. Whether it be by texture, color, the amount it gets worn or another factor, tidying up will give you an isolated task to rid your mind of all other thoughts. Not to mention it makes planning outfits for the holiday season much more enjoyable! Happy sorting!

Catch up on sleep!

Chances are, for the majority of people taking destress days like this, especially in college, one of the biggest reasons is a lack of quality ZZZs. If you’re feeling sluggish and no amount of coffee or Red Bull will recharge you, this day would be a perfect reason to turn the alarm completely off and count sheep.

Binge-watch some Netflix!

Ah yes, the classic use of spare time! There is nothing wrong with indulging in a couple episodes (whoops, I meant seasons) of your favorite show on a day dedicated to doing nothing, even though you’re fully capable of it! TV is meant for enjoyment, so feel no shame in dedicating this whole day to pressing the “Next episode” button. In between seasons, feel free to throw in a little online shopping to round out the lazy day (you might need to after sorting through your  closet).

Taking life one day at a time is a mentality that many people have because it’s a surefire way to tackle all tasks with the same ambition consistently. But that can be draining and sometimes a little hard when you’re constantly GO GO GO. On November 30th, stop and observe an area of your life that could use some more attention and spend the whole day providing yourself with betterment and replenishment! I hope this list sparked some inspiration for your well-deserved Stay Home Because You’re Well Day!

My name is Hannah Hippensteel, and I like to say I'm a Chicago city-slicker, but I'm actually from the 'burbs. I'm currently a senior at Winona State with a major in mass communication-journalism and a minor in sociology. Catch me enjoying all Winona has to offer: the bluffs, the incomparable Bloedow's Bakery, and not to mention, Minnesota boys. With a goal of working at Teen Vogue, Seventeen or Glamour magazine, I'm soaking up every opportunity to keep my finger on the pulse and share my personal voice!
I love exploring the outdoors, writing, whales, and have a major sweet tooth for cheesecake! Volleyball and hockey are my favorite sports to play and watch. When it comes to writing, I love it. I truly enjoy being able to write articles and stories about topics people would enjoy reading.
