Fun Facts about Mickey Mouse

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

November 18th is the birthday of one of the most iconic characters probably ever. He is the face behind Disney and is turning 89 years old today. Mickey Mouse first came into our lives back in 1928 and has since become one of the biggest icons ever.

So, to commemorate his 89th birthday, here are a bunch of fun facts about the one and only Mickey Mouse.

–       Mickey Mouse was the first cartoon character to earn a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which was given on his 50th birthday in 1978.

–       Oswald the Rabbit, Walt Disney’s first incarnation of Mickey Mouse, didn’t actually become Mickey Mouse until 1928.

–       Walt Disney got the idea for Mickey from a trained mouse at his desk.

–       Mickey’s original name (before Mickey) was Mortimer.

–       Mortimer is now the name of Mickey’s archrival.

–       In Fantasia, Mickey was cast as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice over Dopey.

–       Of all the Mickey Mouse merchandise, the wristwatches were among the first to go on sale, having launched as a watch for boys in 1933, and are still among the most         popular. Extra Fun-Fact: I have one of these watches, but in red.

–       The first words Mickey ever spoke in a cartoon were “hot dogs” in The Karnival Kid in 1929.

–       Although they never married on screen, Walt Disney confirmed that Mickey and Minnie are indeed married.

–        The two people who gave the voiceover for Mickey (Wayne Allwine) and Minnie (Russi Taylor) were married in real life.

–        Okay, how cute is this: Mickey’s full name is Michael Theodore Mouse. Simply adorable!

If you’re interested in the process of how Mickey Mouse came to be and some more unknown fun facts about him, then I suggest watching Walt Before Mickey on Netflix.

Happy Birthday Mickey; 89 years never looked better!
