A Reminder of What We Have to Be Grateful For

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

As the world is moving at a faster pace, many people are finding it hard to keep up with their day-to-day lives. We are all busy people with jam-packed schedules, wishing it was Friday when it’s only Tuesday, letting work and school overrun our lives. Getting caught up in what seems to make the world go ‘round leaves many people forgetting to appreciate the important things; those small moments and actions that happen every day that we may not even notice as we are too busy, and the aspects of our lives we simply take for granted. It’s important to reflect on those things and how people go out of their way for each other for little to no recognition.

Here are a few reminders of the important and somewhat small things you may not always notice for what they are, but when you do, they make your day just a little bit better and leave you feeling a little more grateful.

Waking up to messages on your phone

Since we’re all addicted to our cell phones, why not appreciate the fact that you woke up to messages from people who were awake before you? When your friend got up this morning, they thought of you at some point before beginning their busy day.

The view

There are parts of the world where one’s daily view is not as peaceful as yours. For some, home is the safest place, and sometimes, not even that. You are able to walk outside, smell the clean (for the most part) air, and walk down the street without concern for your safety. Isn’t that something to appreciate every single day?

Random acts of kindness

Do you always notice when someone holds the door for you, says bless you when you sneeze, or simply says excuse me when walking in front of you, or trying to get by? Some of the most considerate, thoughtful acts strangers do go unnoticed or unappreciated.

Laughing

Laugh at yourself, laugh at your friends, and laugh at your loved ones. It’s good for the soul and it’s great for your abs (apparently??). The more you laugh, the happier you are, and the less serious you take yourself; the more satisfied you may be with your success. Laughing doesn’t come easy for some, so appreciate the things you have to laugh at day-to-day.

Your education

There are numerous places around the world where not everyone has equal access to an education, let alone the opportunity to go to university. While it sometimes seems like a burden, it’s important to remember that you have been blessed with this valuable experience, and it should not be taken for granted.

Your health

Yours, your family’s, and your friends. Being healthy is something many people take for granted. It isn’t until you or someone close to you falls ill that you learn to appreciate your good health, and how much of an impact it has on your life.

Social ties

Your social circles are imperative to your experiences. It is important to recognize the people in your life, and appreciate how they impact your day; especially the people who are there for you when you are struggling or need more support.

And of course…

Seeing a dog

I’m just putting this one out there! Dogs are a source of happiness for many and they don’t even know it. They’re cute, they’re friendly (most of the time), and they’re entertaining. We ought to be thankful these furry companions are in our lives.

So many parts of our daily endeavors are privileges and we often take them for granted. What do we value, if not the things that are vital to our success? So next time you’re feeling like the world just doesn’t have your back, think of some of the things you haven’t shed gratitude on lately. It may help you regain your appreciation for life.
