Tampon Tuesday: Londoners Unite to Highlight Female Poverty Concerns

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Western chapter.

Tampon Tuesday returns to London, Ontario on September 12th at Jack Astor’s Bar & Grill on Fanshawe Park Rd. E.

Tampon Tuesday is a monthly event that encourages the community to support and donate feminine hygiene products to the local food bank.

“It is about providing a basic need to women and girls in poverty,” says Mandi Fields, CTV London’s Community Relations Co-ordinator.

Fields has been promoting this event since April 2009, when she noticed a lack of feminine hygiene products being donated to London’s annual Spring Food Drive.

“In eight and a half years, Tampon Tuesday has evolved from the initial concept of tampons being expensive to people fully understanding the misogyny and the shame that comes along with feminine hygiene,” says Fields.

Without access to feminine hygiene products, women in poverty resort to unsanitary and unhealthy forms of menstrual protection. The used ends of cigarettes and toilet paper are commonly transformed into tampons.

This event is working to help local women in need gain access to proper hygiene products, donating more than 53,761 boxes to date.

A turning point for the program was when Shopper’s Drug Mart agreed to meet and discuss the initiative. Now a proud sponsor of the event, Shopper’s Drug Mart Pharmacists and Owners regularly attend and speak at Tampon Tuesday events.

Last month, Syed Khalid Mahmood, Pharmacist/Owner of the Shopper’s Drug Mart on Adelaide St. N., spoke at the event stating, “I don’t need to have a daughter, a sister, or a wife to understand that this is important.”
