A Letter to My Sister

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Western chapter.

Dear Sarah,

You’ve been my best friend since I was born. I mean, of course we’ve had our ups and downs, and other best friends, but none like you. You were my first friend. (Not that you had any choice in the matter).

I always wanted to hang out with you, even when we were kids and you would have your older friends over, I always tried to fit in. Even though I was six and you were ten, you never made it feel like there was really an age difference. When I still wanted to play with toys you would play with me. You would teach me what you knew, and we would help each other with everything.

We were never perfect though. I can remember lots of fights, over nothing, that would lead to us getting in trouble. But more times than that were the laughs, the late night talks and how you would let me sleep on the futon in your room every night all summer. I’m grateful for every time we had to sit at the table, long after mom and dad had finished dinner, because we had been laughing too much to eat.

Laughing together is one of the most common things in our relationship. Whether it was me falling or accidently hurting myself, or you saying something that made no sense, it was always funny. When I’m stressed or upset you can always cheer me up. I’m so glad to have all of those memories of us goofing off and having an amazing time together.

Even though we’re both adults the relationship we have has never changed. We may not live in the same place, but when we get together it’s always like we’ve never been apart. You read my mind like no one else can, which confuses mom but always makes me laugh. We have so much fun together doing nothing and I’m grateful for that. Especially when that involves garlic strips and Disney movies.

My love from animals also came from you and your adoration for all living things. Somehow you’ve convinced mom and dad to let us have pet after pet. You care for them all so well too, and I admire your patience to take care of each and every one of them in individualized ways. I could never have the patience for all that you do for them every day.

Thank you for always being there for me. No matter how long it’s been since we last spoke, or how many times we have fought. Thank you for always making me laugh when I need it, and for being someone to bounce ideas off of when I can’t decide what to buy mom for Christmas. Thank you for laughing with me every time one of us does something dumb. Thank you for being there for me.

Thank you for being my best friend, Angie
