How to Prepare for Sorority Recruitment Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

September is here! Which means Recruitment Week is right around the corner! Greek life at Waterloo may be small but that doesn’t mean it isn’t mighty. Whether you’re in first year or in your final year, it’s never too late to start thinking about joining a sorority. The University of Waterloo currently has three sororities, all full of amazing girls just waiting to welcome you home.

Here are a few tips we hope will prepare you for this year’s Recruitment Week, which runs from September 24nd – September 30th. Get ready Warriors, it’s going to be an intense but memorable week!

1. Relax

Yes, we know this one might be hard to do but trust us, it’s important. We know how nerve-wracking recruitment can be, especially your first event. Once you get through the first event, you’ll have a basic idea of how the rest of the week is going to be. Just remember, all of the girls have been in your shoes before and they honestly want to get to know you. Just take a deep breath and remember to have fun!

2. Don’t get frustrated

We aren’t going to lie to you, it’s going to be a long week. Between balancing your classes, recruitment events, homework and keeping your mental stability, it’s extremely easy to get frustrated and discouraged. At this point, it’s important to remember to take care of yourself. If you find yourself wearing thin, watch that Netflix show you’ve had in your queue for the last 4 days or grab coffee with a friend. You’ll be able to make a much better impression if you are rested and relaxed. Rejuvenate and enjoy recruitment week. Sorority recruitment is just the beginning of years full of friendship and memories, so stay excited! It’ll be 100% worth it in the end.

3. Dress for you

Dress how you want to dress! Don’t show up in sweatpants of course, but don’t wear things you typically wouldn’t. Dress to impress, but remember to show your personality through your clothing choices. The girls care about getting to know who you are, so show them exactly that. Some events have pretty specific dress codes which you’ll be told about in advance, so try to adhere to those. Plan your outfits ahead of time if you really want to, it’ll mean you’ll have one less thing to worry about in your busy week.

4. Ask questions

Don’t be afraid to ask for more information! If there’s something you want to know, just ask. The girls are more than willing to clear up any confusion and give you more information. It could be anything from finances to recruitment logistics, to the girls’ own personal experiences. Try to get to know the girls as well; ask them questions about their lives, what they like about their sisterhood or even something as simple as what their favourite animal is. Enjoy the conversation, they are just as excited and nervous to meet you as you are to meet them!

5. Forget about stereotypes and keep an open mind

We cannot stress this enough. Walk into each event with an open mind and don’t let others’ opinions cloud your judgement. It’s super important that you end up in the sorority that is the perfect fit for you. Forget about any stereotypes you may have heard about the sororities, Greek Life and Recruitment Week and form your own opinions. Your Panhellenic guide is there to offer you unbiased guidance as well so don’t be afraid to reach out if you need too.

6. Be yourself

Ultimately, this is the best tip we can give you. You want to find the organization that you can see yourself in for a long time. Don’t be afraid to show the girls who you are and don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. They want you to be honest and they will be honest with you in return. Remember, your sisterhood will love you for who you are, so always stay true to yourself. Listen to your gut and let it guide you. You’ll find your way home in the end.

Hopefully you’ll be able to use these tips in during Recruitment Week! Don’t forget to follow the University of Waterloo Sororities page and check out the Greek Council booth during Clubs Day for more information!
