Frances FarmerBy May 27, 2011 - 11:17pm The story of Frances Farmer's life is one of the more tragic among UW alumni. You may not recognize the actress unless you are a classic film buff, but chances are you've probably heard of her and her connections to Seattle. READ MORE |

"Do you like smooth jazz?"By May 21, 2011 - 5:37pm In honor of the near-end of the school year, we here at Her Campus Washington have decided to highlight our favorite smooth jazzy Washington graduate, Kenny G. Sometimes life at school can be hard and all you need is to put on Mr. Kenny, the Seattle-born-and-raised jazz musician. Knowing that he graduated from UW makes the delicate notes from his woodwind instruments that much better. So please, take a break from all those heavy assignments and papers. Run a bubble bath, grab a glass of wine and watch the following video to celebrate UW's beloved K.G.: READ MORE |

Alumni We Love: Rainn WilsonBy April 29, 2011 - 10:58pm Rainn Wilson rules both when he's playing Dwight Schrute and when he is not. Born in Seattle in 1966, Rainn grew up here until he moved to Illinois with his parents during his last years of high school. Although he technically didn't graduate from UW, his background in theater is from here! It definitely paid off, considering he has many regular roles in shows such as The Office and Six Feet Under. But his bio doesn't stop there! Wilson has a lot of accomplishments under his belt--humanitarian work in Haiti, active member of the Baha'i faith, and creator of Soulpancake.com. Rainn, HC Washington loves you! Also, because of all the Office action happening last night, here's a video of Rainn's greatest hits at... |

Alumni We Love: Kyle MacLachlanBy April 16, 2011 - 1:29pm Sigh. Oh, I'm sorry. I was just admiring Kyle MacLachlan. Or as I like to call him "the Campus Cutie to rule all Campus Cuties". Kyle MacLachlan is from Yakima (I know there are lots of you Yakimans (Yakimites? Yakimanians?) going to UW!) and graduated from the University of Washington in 1982. He studied drama here and oh boy did it pay off! Kyle got his start in David Lynch's 1984 film, Dune. He went on to partner with Lynch for many memorable projects including Blue Velvet and my personal favorite, the television series Twin Peaks. Agent Cooper! READ MORE |

Alumni We Love: Mary Maxwell GatesBy April 9, 2011 - 5:26pm If you go to UW, or have even been on campus, you've probably heard the name "Mary Gates" or "Mary Maxwell Gates" from scholarships, halls, etc. But who was this bossy lady anyways? Mary Gates was born Mary Maxwell in Seattle in 1929. She attended the University of Washington, and graduated class of 1950. It was there she met and married William H. Gates, Sr. READ MORE |

Alumni We Love: Wing LukeBy April 2, 2011 - 3:06pm Alright, I know the "Alumni We Love" series has mainly focused on women, as there are not nearly as many women "notable alumni" listed at UW as there are men. However, this is not to say that there aren't tons of bossy males who graduated from UW and made a difference. With this post, I particularily wanted to talk about Wing Luke. Maybe some of us have had to visit The Wing Luke Museum for class, but did you know who he was? Or that he was a University of Washington alumnus? READ MORE |

A History of Famous HuskiesBy March 19, 2011 - 4:16pm It wasn't until 1922 that the husky became the official mascot at the University of Washington. Before the huskies, they were the "sundodgers"...what? Way to go on that pessimism, early UW. Anyways, once the new mascot was put in place, the first husky was adopted by the school. His name was Frosty I, and he was placed in the care of the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He was an Alaskan Malamute pup (apparently the only kind of their breed UW uses, being that they are the strongest of their kind) and liked to go to football games and roam the streets of the U-district for fun. Dogs don't live forever (even if they do "all go to heaven"), so there have been many pups after Frosty I to represent the UW. Here's a brief history on all the lovable doggies... |
