Business of Bras – Ode to the Sports Bra

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Washington chapter.

The Business of Bras is a new Her Campus Washington series that will unabashedly explore the world of brassieres. First up, the sports bra!

According to Wikipedia: “A sports bra is a bra that provides additional support to female breasts during physical exercise. Sturdier than typical bras, they minimize breast movement, alleviate discomfort, and reduce potential damage to chest ligaments.”

Humble Origins: Initially called a “jockbra”, the sports bra was invented in 1977 by Lisa Lindahl for her sister who complained about bad experience working out in an every-day bra. As you may have also experienced, she was annoyed by straps that fell down, chafed skin, and achy boobs after running. To remedy this problem Lindahl cut up a pair of jockstraps and sewed them together into a bra; and marketed the garment as “The Jockbra.” Fascinating.

Usefullness to a Collegiette: When late to class a sports bra is always the #1 choice. Sprinting, ducking and weaving through hoards of classmates can be painful without proper support!

Cons for a Collegiette: Flattening.

Ultimate HC Washington opinion: Definitely wear one to the IMA.
