10 Reasons to Date an Engineer (or an Engineering Major)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Washington chapter.

1. Engineers have a life outside of you. They have a pretty demanding job which means that they won’t need you to entertain them all the time and vice versa. They are passionate enough about what they do to have a real job in something that they are legitimately interested in, so likely they have interests outside of the relationship.

2. Engineers are thoughtful. Attention to detail is part of their job description and thus by now something they do naturally. What girl doesn’t love when the guy she is dating brings extra water for them on a hike or her favorite flowers just because? It might just be his personality but its always nice when they prepare for dates with you.

3. Engineers are plentiful in the Seattle area. If the first engineer doesn’t strike your fancy don’t fret, there are plenty more within a ten mile radius. Likewise there are many different types of engineers from the software engineers you can find at Amazon and Microsoft to the audio engineers in a music studio to aerospace engineers chilling at Boeing. You may find you feel chemistry with a chemical engineer or a spark with an electrical engineer.

4. They are on Tinder. It’s not too hard to meet them because most of the guys on Tinder are engineers (based on the author’s experience not a true statistic).

5. There aren’t many women in their field. Despite growing numbers of women entering the STEM fields, men still outnumber women exponentially. If you spot an engineering cutie he is probably surrounded by males all the time and may not get the opportunity to meet attractive women (like you) in class or at work. Strike while the iron is hot if you want to capture this cutie!

6. They know that hard work pays off. Both in their chosen career and in your relationship they are likely to put in the effort to get what they want thus taking you on more and better dates than the average man.

7. They can help you with all your tech needs. Perhaps your computer has some issue and you don’t know how to fix it. I’m not advocating using them for your own personal gain however he may feel honored to be the man you turn to for help. It shows that you trust their expertise in the area and that they can provide for you.

8. Engineers have excellent communication skills. One of the most important parts of their career is communication with other engineers and even regular people. Engineers tend to be able to switch perspectives easily when dealing with a problem and explain things multiple ways. Communication is key in healthy relationships adding to the reasons why an engineer is a perfect suitor!

9. “Geek” is a good identity. If they see themselves as nerdy or geeky there are a certain number of other personality traits you can assume they associate with. This hot nerd is also less likely to view himself as a player which is advantageous to for a woman seeking a committed relationship.

10. An engineering man expects to plan dates. Engineers are usually creative in their problem solving skills with their work which will likely translate when trying to get to know your interests and desires. Engineers also think in a logical order and realize that if they want to go on a date with you is it more likely to happen if they initiate it or if they take the time to plan it out in advance.

If you’re looking for a “Summer Fling” or a “Long Term Boyfriend” you just might want to test the waters with an engineer or engineering student. Good Luck!
