Top 4 Motivators to Work Out This Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

Let’s face it: around this time of year, we all feel far less motivation to hit the gym. With the prospect of baggy winter clothes on the horizon instead of bikinis and the cloudy skies overhead, working out doesn’t feel like a priority. And let’s not forget all of the fabulously festive (and fattening!) foods that will soon start to appear, from bags of Halloween candy to Mom’s pecan pie and mashed potatoes. In reality, though, now is the time to work out as a means to de-stress and stay active in the midst of wintry weather and grueling exams. Need more motivation?

1.     Catch up on TV shows While you may have forgotten the names of characters in your once-favorite shows, it’s never too late to start catching up! Cardio machines at the Estrogym have individual televisions or bring your iPad to stream old episodes. Plus, many episodes are 30 minutes to an hour in length, so you can easily watch a full episode while burning calories at the same time!

2.     De-Stress With fall being the time of year when schoolwork and extracurricular activities swing into high gear, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with stress. Exercise is a great way to release pent-up anxiety and take time for yourself, if only for 20 minutes. The rush you’ll feel after a good workout can provide the motivation you need to tackle your commitments!

3.     Feel Accomplished Setting fitness goals for yourself is a great way to jump-start an exercise routine and track improvement. Many towns offer short holiday-themed races for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Sign up for one in your hometown and make it a goal to complete it. The thought of crossing that finish line will propel you outside or to the gym!

4.     Inspiring Quotes Because sometimes all you need is a little wisdom:

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”—Agatha Christie

“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.”—Ghandi

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.”—Jim Rohn
