Sorority Big/Little Week: the Big Benefits!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

The week of Feb. 13 seemed like it would be like any other: filled with classes, busywork, and downtime with friends.  However, on Monday morning, many sorority girls found surprises at their doors, giving their week a pleasant start.  But where did these surprises come from?

Finding the source of these gifts did not take much investigation: the new pledges in various sororities had been showered with gifts from their new “Bigs.”  Throughout the entire week, their “Littles” would wake up feeling as if it was Christmas morning, eagerly awaiting the gifts in store for them.

While receiving gifts from an anonymous source was fun, it also presented a challenge in trying to figure out who your “Big” could be.  The recipients of the gifts analyzed every word in every note, trying to find any clues that would give away the identities of their mysterious benefactors.

Finally, each Big revealed her identity at the end of the week in her own respective way.  This climactic event that had been built up to all week felt special both to the Big and the Little involved.

Personally, I took away many things from Big/Little week, both tangible and intangible.  Sure, I got tons of goodies and enough candy to last me for a whole year, but I also gained an older sister I can look up to.

Growing up with two brothers, I had always been deprived of a sisterly figure in my life.  Don’t get me wrong, I love my brothers dearly, but I had always had a lingering longing for an older sister to serve as a role model and friend.

Now that I have a Big, I feel like I finally have the older sister I’ve always wanted.  My Big is the sister I never had, and I can’t wait to put my sister-free days behind me with her on my side!
