Mike Rielly 2014

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

According to numerous anonymous sources, sophomore Mike Rielly has a lot going for him. He can do the “Patrick Swayze lift” à la Dirty Dancing (or Crazy Stupid Love, if you’re modern) and he bases his life off of Tim Riggins. “Seriously,” says Mike, “I think about what Tim Riggins would do and then I do it.” He also jokes that you can call him Hitch, but you guys will have to decide that one for yourselves. When asked why Mike should be a Campus Cutie, one admirer explained, “Cause he’s on campus and he’s a cutie!” (Although technically Mike lives off campus, on U-Drive…) Regardless, give this Campus Cutie a chance and ignore the fact that he gripes about doing his own laundry.

Hometown?Berkeley Heights, New Jersey.
Grade?Sophomore.
Activities on Campus? I play baseball – I pitch. And I’m in AEPi.
Studying? Finance in the B-school and Math in Art-Sci. I switched in from the Engineering School.
Who do you think nominated you to be Campus Cutie? If I had one guess, I’d say Julie Safferstein. [According to the nomination, Mike’s interests are “steak, frat, baseball, girls.] She teases me about this one really funny thing I said last year about steak.
Is sophomore year better than freshman year? Hmm… that is tough – I like them both! I’ve been going out to bars more recently, which has been fun.
How did you spend your Valentine’s Day? I was sipping on some wine with my friends. I was trying to watch some nice rom-coms!
Tell me an embarrassing story. Last year when the baseball team was traveling to Florida, we were switching metros to get to the airport and we had to wait 30 minutes for the next train, so we were hanging out on the platform. Our coach went around and started handing out luggage tags and that’s when I realized that I had never put one on before. I was trying all these different ways to get it on the suitcase but I couldn’t do it and then some of my teammates started to notice. They started to call the rest of the team over and then brought over the coaches who started videotaping me. Before I knew it the whole metro station was in a circle around me, watching me fumble around with the luggage tag! No one would tell me how to do it but they would give me hints and say if it was hotter or colder to getting it right. Finally, one of the security guards said, “D*mn that white kid is dumb,” and put it on for me. That’s when I should have known that I shouldn’t be an engineer!
Favorite class you are taking this semester? Marketing.
Any summer plans? I plan to tear it up on the Jersey shore. I actually just got a new house down there, so there will be mad fist pumping. Hopefully I will get an internship and play some baseball. I would love to do something with sports. I want to be an agent someday, and maybe work for a sports station or a sports agency.
What is your ideal day?I’d start off with some brunch with the bros at Half & Half – a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, obviously – and I’d follow that up with a nice pickup game of basketball. Follow that up with watching some Friday Nights Light (my favorite show!) and then I’d go out with my boys in AEPi.
Have you ever been in trouble with the law? Hmm… not really? This past summer my friends and I rented out a beach house on the shore and 40-60 kids came down from our hometown. Earlier in the week we had been told to turn down the music by our neighbors, so one night when the police actually showed up, we thought it would be smart to turn off the lights and pretend like we weren’t there. They gave us all drinking tickets and noise violations. They made so much money off of us!
Last white lie you told? Last night when I was on the phone with my mom. I told her, “Yeah, mom, I wear my retainers every night, gosh!”
Tell me about your first kiss.I was in 9th grade and it was with an older girl. I just didn’t know what to do. She was a sophomore or a junior, I can’t remember. I had no idea what to do, what the right approach was, or how to spit game, so eventually I just closed my eyes and stuck out my tongue and went for it. It was a successful night.
Holmes or the DUC?Holmes by far. The carvery wraps are the best on campus. Gotta get there before the crowds.
Time that you have felt the proudest? Sixth grade. We were in the loser bracket championship for basketball and there were three seconds left and we were down by two. Coach called my number and I hit a three-pointer. I fell to the ground and my whole team jumped on top of me.
Funniest thing you have seen on this campus? Last year I saw a kid wearing a cape and carrying a wand to class. He was dead serious – I think he wore it almost every day.
Any publications you read daily?Bro Bible.
Last book you read?Moneyball. It’s better than the movie because it covers the business side of baseball.
Thing you miss most about living with your parents? Definitely making me food and doing my laundry. Actually I can’t even say laundry because I have Wash-U-Wash… But my grandma and my mom would cook me food before games and I miss that.
What are you doing for spring break? Hopefully playing baseball in Florida with the team!
