Mardi Gras Style Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

I know what you’re thinking: Mardi Gras=NOLA. But not necessarily… St. Louis actually has one of the biggest Mardi Gras celebrations in the country and Soulard will be the place to be after spending the wee hours of the morning on Kingsbury. With the millions of Mardi pictures on both Facebook and Instagram that will show how fun WashU actually is, it’s essential to find the perfect outfit. The ideas below will keep you warm and trendy in the cool February weather.

1) Crazy Leggings

Legging with attitude are hidden gems for going out. They are inherently comfortable and sporting a wild print or metallic color will make you stand out in any crowd. Bright, patterned leggings can be found at Forever 21 for less than $15 while metallic gold, green or purple shiny leggings are a little pricier at American Apparel.

2) Tutus

Why not sport the tutu? Mardi Gras is one of the few days of the year where it’s 100% socially acceptable (and even encouraged) to dress absurdly; a tutu enhances looking ridiculous and cute all at the same time. Buy one in purple, gold, green or rainbow (again, why not?) at Party City or Claire’s and throw it over leggings.

3) Special Mardi Gras Beads

Obviously it’s easier to just throw on all of the regular bead necklaces that you accumulated in middle school throughout years at camp and/or bar mitzvah season, but beads with Mardi Gras emblems are much more fun and take accessorizing to the next level. Whether it’s one with a shot glass attached to the bottom or it’s made of fleur de lis and jesters, these funky beads will look good over any top.

4) Sneakers

With the amount of slush on the ground after this snow-filled winter, some type of sneakers will be the move for footwear this Mardi Gras season. Though boots might sound cute, its Converse, Supergas, and Keds that will look edgy and keep you comfortable as you roam around Soulard all day.
