Don’t Let Your Mom Follow Your Insta

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

Before I begin, you should know that I LOVE my parents. Like I’m not even embarrassed to admit it. I’m the youngest of four children, and the brother closest to my age is four years my senior, so I spent the duration of my high school career as an only child. Throughout the years, my parents and I actually became friends…what a concept. If you had told 12-year-old me that this would have happened, she would have gagged.

Social media has become a “must-have” in today’s world, and pretty much everyone is on it–including parents. While it may have begun with grammatically correct Facebook statuses and mobile uploads of baseball games, parents have transitioned to the new “it” app: Instagram.

The amount of times I’ve gotten calls from my mom about my instagram captions is concerning. Whether she’s calling to ask me what I meant by “taking an L” or reprimanding me for using curse words, she always has an opinion about what I’m posting. There’s also her big concern of who’s in my pictures, if they’re nice, do I have classes with them, etc. Oh, and if there’s a boy in a picture I post…she’s already booking hotels for the wedding. Not only do I get concerns regarding my captions, I’ve also gotten a call or two about my “overly revealing” going-out attire. My mother will always preface what she’s saying with, “You look good, but…” and then I know I’m done for.

But yet, I still can’t click that “block” button when I see my mom’s account. Especially being so far from home, it is somewhat reassuring to have her on my follower feed. When it comes to my finsta, however…Joan is most definitely not allowed.
