5 Pieces of Advice for the Girls with High School Boyfriends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

Number 1: Break up.

Kidding. Though that is what over 90% of my high school friends in relationships did. If you’re reading this, you’re probably looking for a cure to those lonely nights (or you just took a wrong turn. It’s the Internet. It happens.) To the girls out there who are chartering new waters at college and sailing through them with an old partner: I applaud you, and I’m sorry. But not really.

1. Stay optimistic

Remember why you chose to stay together in the first place. Once your mind starts on one “what if,” your thoughts can start to spiral out of control. Think of a good memory, or look at a picture you guys took together. Ground yourself in what is, and not those evil ifs. Sometimes, nothing is wrong!

2. Date nights!

Even though you’re physically apart, modern technology has made it easier to be more connected than ever. Movie nights don’t have to be sacrificed! Grab two pairs of headphones, plug one set into a computer (where the movie plays), the other into your phone (which is basically the new physical version of your sweetheart), and count down to pressing play at the same time. It’s not Netflix and Chill, but it makes for quite a night.

3. Plan visits

Yes, you’re both busy. And the college budget can be merciless. But having a day to look forward to can make getting there that much easier. Plan out the day!

4. Support each other

It’s that much harder to cheer each other up when the simplicity of a hug is out of reach. Nonetheless, faith makes things possible. Sometimes it can feel like you have an imaginary boyfriend but he is there for you. Make sure he’s okay.

Also, there’s an app called Avocado where you can send each other virtual hugs.

5. Settle in here

The college transition complicates things. But getting involved and finding a group of friends will take your mind off your incurable sadness. If you’re a little lost on how to settle in, check out “10 Ways to Keep Smiling First Semester”

Stay strong ladies. Let’s be around past Thanksgiving Break, okay? Cheering for us all.

Joanne is a freshman studying econ in arts&sciences. It's not possible for her to not oversleep, and Saturday morning brunch and BD's is her favorite thing at Washu. Joanne also enjoys playing catan, watching doomsday preppers, and reading menus online.
Rachel is a junior in Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis. When she's not using her status as a twin as her obvious fun fact, she'll probably tell you that she loves photography, concerts, travel, Buzzfeed, and slaving over clever Instagram captions.
