Study Abroad: Become a Foodie in Canada

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waseda chapter.

Not just named Canada’s cultural capital where multicultural events and tourist attractions mingle in harmony, Montreal is also great for dining experiences at high-quality restaurants or just grabbing something quick to eat on the road. Whichever you choose, you will surely not be disappointed. Regarding the types of restaurants locate in Montreal, they are very culturally diverse. For the next half-a-year remaining, seeking out for more hidden food talents will be one of my goals.

1. Bouillon Bilk taking French Cuisine to the next level

Price: $$$, tastiness: ✭✭✭✭

Why not start strong with the Michelin restaurant Bouillon Bilk? Despite its high price dishes, you can taste the ultimate flavor and art of French cuisine blend together seamlessly from salad, soup, main dish to dessert. Keeping your budget is important, but you simply cannot miss out trying once at this place.

If you haven’t tried a banh mi, aka Vietnamese sandwich before, it’s your perfect chance to dive in. For vegetable lovers, it is hard not to fall in love with them! With more than ten flavors such as shredded beef, chicken, and pork to choose from, popular Vietnamese sandwich spot Vua is widely enjoyed by workers and students.

The 24-hour restaurant with a cute bagel logo that is always lining up with crowds is St-Viateur Bagel, the most popular bagel place that locals and tourists both love. Serving more than 10 flavors which changes on a daily basis, you can take-out their signature bagels or enjoy a bagel sandwich meal at a reasonable price with large portions.

4. NUDO noodles – Chinese comfort food that won’t let you down

Price: $, tastiness: ✭✭✭

Despite the fact that Chinese food you can find in Montreal has received mixed reviews by customers, one noodle place that I crave from time to time is NUDO noodles. You can see the chef heavily banging the noodle dough on the counter in order to serve foodies great texture, handmade quality noodles. Meat sauce is my personal favorite while they also serve beef noodles.

Bonus: Sansotei Ramen – Japanese FTW pride sacred dish

Price: $$, tastiness: ✭✭✭✭

Spoiler alert: This amazing ramen place is currently only in Toronto and some other parts of Canada, while my secret wish is for them to open in Montreal. Despite the fact that I have tried some good quality ramen in Tokyo (of course), Sansotei serves rich flavored and unforgettable, delicious ramen. Flavors include black soy sauce, being their most popular ramen, tomato for vegetarians, tonkotsu, and several others. If you have the chance to visit Toronto, please do stop by Sansotei.

There are some other additional hidden talents in Montreal and other parts of the country, but the above are some suggestions of of my personal favorites. Trust me, Canada is way more than just maple leaves, coldness and Poutine; the restaurants and cuisines from around the world are superstars that you cannot ignore.
