Panhellenic Preview: Meet the Sororities

As recruitment quickly approaches, you may start to wonder which organization would be the best fit for you. One of the best pieces of advice I got prior to recruitment was to ignore all of the rumors or previous judgments others have made on the organization and follow your own gut. Think of each sorority as a clean slate, and then make the judgments for yourself throughout the week. Before you go through the process, however, it may be a good idea to recognize each sorority and some fun facts about them.

Here is your 2014 Wake Forest Panhellenic Preview:

Alpha Delta Pi, Eta Upsilon Chapter

Established: March 21, 2009
Campus location: Dogwood
Symbols: Diamond, Clasped Hands; Mascot: Alphie the Lion, Violet 
Philanthropy: Alpha Delta Pi hosts Gala for Giving (a family weekend event where they have raised more than $17,000 for the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem), Raffle for Ronald (a raffle held in the spring for great prizes with proceeds benefiting Ronald McDonald House), Pop Top and Drop It (a sorority and fraternity competition for the collection of pop tabs during the semester). Alpha Delta Pi’s National Philanthropy is the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Fun Fact: They are the first national sorority, founded in 1851.

Chi Omega, Zeta Lambda Chapter

Established: January 22, 1994
Campus location: Magnolia Residence Hall
Symbols: Owl and skull and cross bones
Philanthropy: Chi Omega’s major philanthropy event is the Chi Omega Parent’s Weekend Auction to benefit the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research fund (both of his daughters were Wake Forest Chi Omega’s) and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, their national philanthropy. Chi Omega has just granted a wish for a local boy and will be granting another wish this semester, as well as starting an annual spring philanthropy to benefit the NC Make-A-Wish chapter.

Fun facts: In the fall Chi Omega granted a wish for a local boy to visit and stay with the cast of Duck Dynasty. They have their 20th anniversary coming up this month.

Delta Delta Delta, Gamma Kappa Chapter

Established: 1988
Campus location: Kitchin Residence Hall
Symbols: Pearl, Pine, and Pansy; Mascot: Dolphin
Philanthropy: Triple Play, an annual softball tournament benefiting the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Fund – Tri Delta’s national philanthropy.
Spring 2014 President: Annie Stockstill
Current Members: 130
Fun Fact: Tri Delta is Wake Forest’s first national sorority. Tri Delta was founded at Boston University in 1888 in order to “found a society that shall be kind alike to all and think more of a girl’s inner self and character than of her personal appearance.”

Delta Zeta, Pi Delta Chapter

Established: 2005
Campus location: North Campus Apartments Building 6
Symbol: Lamp; Mascot: Turtle
Philanthropy: Turtle Tug, Delta Zeta’s annual philanthropy event supporting their national philanthropies The Starkey Hearing Foundation and The Painted Turtle Camp. Delta Zeta also hosts an annual Volleyball Tournament with Lambda Chi Alpha benefitting the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund, the DZ Color Run 5K, and Delta Zeta Learn 2 Listen Week.

Symbols: Kite, black and gold pansy
Philanthropy: CASA Royal, a casino night held every spring in the barn to raise money for Kappa Alpha Theta’s national philanthropy, Court Appointed Special Advocates

Fun Facts: Theta became the first Greek letter fraternity for women when it was established in 1870.

Kappa Beta Gamma, Sigma Chapter

Established: December 4, 2010
Campus Location: Martin Hall
Symbol: Star
Philanthropy: Kappa Beta Gamma hosts Breakfast with Beta, a late night event benefiting their national philanthropy, The Special Olympics. They also co-host Strikes with Pikes, a bowling event held with Pi Kappa Alpha.

Fun Fact: Kappa Beta Gamma was founded in 1917 at Marquette University. There are currently 17 active chapters and they are international.

 

Kappa Delta, Zeta Omicron Chapter

Campus location: Davis
Symbol: Nautilus shell; Mascot: Teddy bears
Philanthropy: Shamrock 5K (coming up in March!) which benefits Prevent Child Abuse America. Kappa Delta also hosts various events with the Girl Scouts of America including selling cookies (coming soon this semester!)

Kappa Kappa Gamma, Zeta Psi Chapter

Symbols: Key, Fleur de lys (iris); Mascot: Owl,
Philanthropy: Every February, the Zeta Psi Chapter joins together for Kappa Kisses: an annual event selling valentines, with all proceeds benefiting the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation and their national philanthropy, Reading is Fundamental (RIF). Their biggest annual event is Kappa Kaddies: a charity golf tournament with all proceeds benefiting Brenner Children’s Hospital. Kappa also hosts Kappas Take the Kourt, a tennis tournament benefiting RIF.
