Non-Beachy Spring Break Destinations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

With Winston dropping into freezing temperatures (and snow!), we’re all dreaming of spring break. The good news? It’s only three weeks away! If you haven’t started planning, you should do so now. Here are some less-traditional (non-beach) vacation spots! Distract yourself from the cold with these wonderful destinations!

New Orleans

Didn’t get to celebrate Mardi Gras? Don’t worry – you can travel down to Louisiana for spring break! Stroll along Bourbon Street in the French Quarter or if it is a pretty day, visit the Garden District. The Backstreet Cultural Museum and the National World War II Museum are both worth a visit. There are several historical churches and if you’re interested in architecture, the Old Ursuline Convent is gorgeous.

Washington, D. C.

Escape to our capital for some culture! You can visit all of the museums, eat in some delightful little cafes (or bakeries…Georgetown Cupcake, anyone?), or visit the National Zoo. Our break is a little early, but you might catch some of the famous cherry blossoms.

New York

In the mood for the big city? Catch a play on Broadway or update your closet with the newest fashions. There are of course the classic destinations: Statue of Liberty, MoMA, Empire State Building, the Guggenheim, Brooklyn Bridge, and Times Square. Other notable places to see are Carnegie Hall, Ellis Island, and the 9/11 Memorial.

Grand Canyon

If you haven’t ever seen the Grand Canyon, it is definitely worth a visit! This landmark is breathtaking, especially with a layer of snow. You could easily pair this with a visit to a national park or to a ski resort!

Skiing

If you want a break from cities, try the great outdoors! Whether you decide to fly out west (Park City, UT or Vail, CO) or stay more local (Beech Mountain or Sugar Mountain in NC), skiing or snowboarding is insanely fun. Plus, after skiing all day you can relax in a hot tub at night!

Service

It may be too late to apply for a Wake Alternative Break, but checking out volunteering either in Winston or in your hometown can be an excellent way to recharge. A good guide is projects-abroad.org, but a quick Google search will turn up a lot of opportunities!

Winston-Salem

If you can’t afford to travel for break, consider planning some day trips! There are a ton of interesting places nearby! Hike Pilot Mountain or Hanging Rock, go to Old Salem, and visit the old Campus in Wake Forest, NC. You can go to Charlotte one day to shop or to Asheville to see the Biltmore!

Wherever you go, remember to be safe and look out for each other!
