Freshman Problems: To Rush or Not to Rush

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Since Wake Forest is a school with delayed rush, the first semester gives plenty of time for freshmen girls to mull over the most common question I’ve heard since arriving at Wake Forest: are you rushing a sorority?! Now, as a person who was 100% set on rushing before I even came to college, my answer has become almost automatic. But I’ve also heard every possible response on the yes-to-no spectrum when it comes to the question of rush. Whether you’re someone who is in no way interested in Greek life, or someone who’s ready to rush whenever possible, there’s no wrong path to take in terms of recruitment. As for those of you who are too torn about the process to decide, here’s my two cents:

One of the reasons I personally can’t wait to rush is because it’s so exciting to picture yourself in an immediate family. Not only does this give you the opportunity to be a part of a group you can be proud of, but it also gives you new friendships, connections, and service opportunities. During freshman year, it can sometimes be hard to see more than just the people in your hall or classes; rushing can introduce you to people you may have otherwise never known. A sense of belonging is something everyone wants to feel, and joining a sorority – a sisterhood – can give you that special experience.

Even though the opportunity to rush can seem hard to pass up, it’s important to remember that rush is a choice. Your decision about whether or not to rush is completely up to you! Other organizations and clubs can offer similar social experiences that sororities do, and it all comes down to what you truly want to do. No certain club defines you or your college experience, but if the rush process seems like something you’re interested in, then going through recruitment could be a truly rewarding experience and an opportunity to make lifelong friends.
