Fenty Beauty: Breaking the Foundation of the Beauty Industry

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

So, if you haven’t heard of Fenty Beauty by now, you’re missing out – and we all know how bad FOMO really is.

But what is Fenty Beauty?! Fenty Beauty is the new make-up line created by the one and only Rihanna. It’s an inclusive, cruelty-free brand created to empower and enhance natural beauty. Or as in the words of RiRi herself, “Fenty Beauty was created for everyone: for women of all shades, personalities, attitudes, cultures and races. I wanted everyone to feel included. That’s the real reason I made this line.”

And she wasn’t lying. Let me educate you real quick:

Fenty Beauty has an oil-free, cruelty free and climate adaptive (sweat and humidity resistant) foundation line with a range of 40 shades. This range covers the “in-betweens” of the four prominent shades most beauty brands use: light, medium, tan, and dark. The difference? Rihanna went above and beyond to include shades that the most popular and widely-used brands miss and usually don’t include.

Now, I know most women of color are knowledgeable of different make-up brands that do carry darker shades (occasionally the in-between shades as well), but also know that they aren’t the best quality. Some of them carry very few darker shades which limits even more what women are able to buy. Not only are they limited in the darker shades, but often times they lack nuance in fairer shades as well which is one of the several reasons why I am fully supporting the Fenty Beauty line – it’s way more inclusive than any other brand out there! Not only does this brand have a diverse foundation line, but it also has several other products that many makeup lovers must have in their bag:

  • Four creamy and highly pigmented duo highlighters

  • Two opaque single highlighters (for days you want to be pearl-y or golden)

  • Four rich and velvety trio sticks for contouring, concealing and highlighting

**Note: you can buy the shimmer (highlighter) sticks individually in 10 different shades as well as the matte (contour and concealer) sticks individually in 20 different shades.

  • One universal, moisturizing and plumping lip gloss

  • One pore-erasing and light weight primer

For all of your brushes and non-make up needs, the line also carries a foundation brush, highlight brush, make-up sponge, three to-go brushes for pick-me-ups and blotting paper and powder.

It makes sense why this brand is almost sold out – I mean, it’s Rihanna, who wouldn’t want to buy this? In addition, the innovative aspect of her make up line is revolutionary and unmatched. Anyone who has started a make-up line never starts with foundation because it is the most complex in creating the formula and finding the perfect shades that fit majority of the population. HOWEVER, this woman – Robyn Rihanna Fenty – accomplished the perfect soft-matte, oil-free, cruelty-free, sweat resistant, humidity resistant, lightweight but medium coverage foundation for ALL types of beauty.

This is an Afro-Caribbean (who identifies as black) woman – that’s two minority statuses that are doubted and stereotyped – who has created not only music, clothing and perfume but now make-up. Make-up that is universal. Make-up that is black-owned. Make-up that is inclusive, diverse and is made to address all of those that have been missed.

She is snatching wigs. She is snatching lives. I’m officially SHOOK.
