Fashion in the Forest: Tennis Shoes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Tennis shoes seem to be that one pair of shoes that everyone owns, but they are normally overlooked in the fashion world. However, tennis shoes have recently started to become a more regular occurrence for the fashionable and daring. In addition to tennis shoes being “in,” I thought I would also write about them because they are so prevalent in Europe. Living in Winston-Salem, it was very easy to forget that most big cities of the world require a lot of walking. Let me tell you, the British are not afraid of walking. We walk EVERY WHERE in London. I am not talking about cute half-mile treks down the road, but nearly 8-10 miles a day. Due to the continuous amount of walking, I have found a comfy pair of shoes to be an absolute necessity. What’s better option than tennis shoes?! So, if you are trying to add a little something daring and new into your wardrobe or you are just looking for a cute way to wear tennis shoes, read on.

First of all, don’t just wear your running shoes. Leave those sneakers for your workouts at the gym or when you’re sprinting outside. Some great, trendy shoes are Chucks, Vans, Nikes, or New Balances. These options are all comfy, relatively affordable brands that also sell in fun colors and patterns. Try a solid color instead of a pattern because that is easier to rock and gives you more room to experiment with your clothes.

There are a couple of directions you could go in with your outfit while wearing tennis shoes. I think the easiest way to rock this trend is to, ironically, not think about your shoes as actual tennis shoes. I’ve found it easier to just imagine they are flats, and plan your outfit accordingly. That way, your outfit doesn’t have to look workout chic and you don’t have to over compensate for the fact that you are wearing tennis shoes.

Personally, I rock the black or white tennis shoes, but I think colorful ones can also be really fun. A really cool way to wear neon tennis shoes would be to wear them with a cute skirt or some other girly outfit. Then your crazy shoes are off-set by the rest of your outfit.

Finally, wearing tennis shoes with skinny jeans, a button down and a graphic sweater is probably one of the cutest outfits you could rock. This look is so casual, but put together and perfect for walking around campus and going to class!

If you come up with an awesome way to wear tennis shoes, or try one of these ideas, I would love to hear! Just email me or send me pictures at hcfashionintheforest@gmail.com. I will make sure to get you on the Pinterest page! Have a great and fashionable week!
