Fashion in the Forest: How to be cute but not pop a button on Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Thanksgiving is one of those generally accepted days that you can give up on your diet and healthy eating plans to enjoy turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. However, that does not mean that it is acceptable to wear sweatpants to Thanksgiving dinner. So how do you look cute, but still feel comfortable after your second helping? Here are some ways to help you enjoy your food and still have a fashion-forward Thanksgiving!

Tip 1 – leggings can be your best friend: Just because you can’t wear sweatpants, does not mean you can’t wear leggings or jeans. Actually, in this particular instance, I think leggings might be a wonderful idea since they won’t hinder your food baby! If you are going to wear leggings, make sure to wear a nice sweater that covers your butt and not a ratty sweatshirt. This would also be a wonderful time to rock a cute scarf or necklace and some booties. Adding that little heel will make you feel fabulous even if you eat too much turkey!

Tip 2 – warm and neutral: Sticking with a simple and neutral color palette is not only sliming, but looks classy even if you are wearing jeans! I would recommend staying away from white because that is just asking for trouble, especially on Thanksgiving. If black isn’t your thing, I would suggest gray and navy, which look just as good. Plus, with gray and navy, you can wear different shades and it doesn’t look quite as awkward as wearing different shades of black. Different shades of black definitely exist – we can discuss this later!

Tip 3 – experiment: Thanksgiving at my house is very laid back, so I always use it as an opportunity to test new outfits and new layering combos. A button-down, pullover sweater, and vest is kind of my go-to, so I mix it up with different necklaces or accessories. For my laid back Thanksgiving, this is perfect because I still look nice, but I am comfortable.

Tip 4 – sweater dresses: If your family is not quite so casual and you want to wear a dress, or look nicer, I would recommend a sweater dress. Not only are they super warm, but also they are very comfortable. You probably don’t want to wear that awesome bandage dress you just bought; save it for New Years! With a sweater dress, it is very easy to bundle, which I love to do, and you will still look very nice. Tights are also a must. Add black booties, too  my favorite!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and send me pictures of your awesome outfits or other ideas you have for Fashion in the Forest!
