Beauty Blog: Top 5 Beauty Rules to Live by

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

1. Take off your makeup before you go to bed

I know it might seem like a good idea at the time; it’s 1 AM in the morning and you just trudged back from the library. You’re craving to tumble into bed with makeup on and all. But whatever you do, don’t do this! If you are wearing makeup from the day, take a moment to wash it off. Sleeping in makeup can “clog the pores while you sleep, resulting in the [dreaded] development of acne” (Kitchens).

2. Exfoliate

Exfoliation is the key to a glowing complexion. By exfoliating once a week you are removing dead skin cells that pile up from pollution in the air. Plus, who doesn’t like to lie back on their super comfortable dorm beds while a peel works its magic? That’s my definition of relaxation.

3. Don’t forget the neck

It may seem trivial now, but the skin on your neck is as sensitive as the skin around your eyes. So treat it nicely, and lavish it with creams. Your fifty-year old self will thank you for it.

4. Take care of your eyes

When applying eye cream, or any form of eye makeup, make sure to use your ring finger. You don’t want to apply too much pressure to damage the delicate skin around your orbital bone; make sure to pat in cosmetics rather than rub.

5. Do NOT pop pimples

It has been said a million times, and now I will say it a million and one times: DO NOT POP PIMPLES. Popping pimples may lead to permanent scarring. If you have a big event coming up and you just cannot deal with the atrocity on your face, and said atrocity happens to be a white head, take a Q-tip and run it under very hot water. Then place the Q-tip to the head of the pimple and apply light pressure until the white part is gone. The hot water effectively brings the pimple to the surface and is the best possible way to get rid of the sucker. However, if you can, hold off on doing anything to the pimple – time will heal it, and what you tend to pay most attention to, no one else even notices.
