10 Changes Wake Needs to Consider: A Senior Reflection

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

I truly have loved my time here as a Demon Deacon. But with that said, I’ve seen our campus change a lot in my four years. I’ve seen 5 brand new buildings put up, an entire business school relocated, Snooki in Wait Chapel, two new athletic coaches and an increase in the amount of our student body (and not to mention, our tuition)…

As graduation nears, I can’t help but wonder what changes Wake’s campus will undergo by the time I’m back for my 5 or 10-year reunion. Well, collegiettes, here is a list of changes I would love to see on our campus.

1.     A pool on the quad

This won’t be a pool for swimming laps. With the traditionally nice southern weather (even though weather this semester was not exactly ideal), it would make sense to add an outdoor pool to enhance the community (and tans!) of our campus. The need for an outdoor pool is greater than ever, as juniors now have to live on campus. Think of how awesome it would be to relax poolside after coming from a scorching hot un-airconditioned class in Tribble.

2.     Starbucks pre-order or delivery system

There’s not much else to say except this will prevent collegiettes from falling asleep in class. If you’re running late to your 9 a.m., how sweet would it be to order your prepaid Starbucks latte to go rather than waiting on a 15-minute line?

3.     Strawberries in the Pit

Yes these pop up during finals week at the “Relaxation Station” but there is no reason why they shouldn’t be available all day, every day!  It would be nice to change up our fruit selection with seasonal berries once in a while.

4.     Better restrooms in Tribble and Carswell

No matter your major, chances are you have visited one or both of these buildings. These cramped, dusty, little caverns remind you of something that was built 100 years ago, not something that could exist on a campus that just built 5 new buildings!

5.     Greek Row

What better way to keep everything condensed into one area than creating a Greek Row? Where could this Greek Row be? Well, since we just got several new dorms, North Campus Apartments could be turned into this legendary college must-have…

6.     Froyo in Benson

Back in the day we once had Brynns on our campus. Okay, maybe not Brynns, but something similar. Where the salad station is now, we once had Freshens! And while I do love the salad station, some younger collegiettes are forced to take a cab in order to get their froyo fix. Bring back the froyo, Wake!

7.     Fraternities actually still existing

Three fraternities have been compromised within the past two semesters. Greek life has been an important part of many students’ experiences and it would be very unfortunate to have it disappear from the Wake Forest community.

8.     “Reading Day” lasting longer than a day

Seriously #WorkForest? You expect one day dedicated to studying will help? Other schools have a week – or at least several days! Giving us only one day promotes cramming… or serious study “enhancement” abuse.

9.     Starbucks gift card on your birthday

High Point University students have the awesome perk of getting Starbucks gift cards on their birthdays. How nice would it be if Wake gave each student a little something on his or her special day?

10. More attendance in the stands at athletic games

Imagine: the stands filled to the brim with black and yellow tie-dye shirts. In my past four years, I don’t believe I have ever seen the student section at a football or basketball game full (maybe with one exception). Hopefully with these two new coaches will come a more spirited student fan base!
