Yes to Being Bad and Boujee

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VUU chapter.

[boo• jee, • zhee, boo • zhee] To put it simply, Bourgeoisie was shortened to “Bourgeois”, then “Bougie” or and now in Migos’ case, “Boujee.” [The word “bourgeois” was a term used in the South, often used as an insult, which defined the “uppity” group of Black people who thought that they were better than everyone else].

But in this instance, Boujee isn’t based on your financial circumstances, but more so your front or attitude towards people, specifically men. Being unavailable, uninterested, unapproachable. This applies to woman as well, generally unbothered. The standards that you ‘front’ to the public whether if it’s only for a night out with your girls or just how you live everyday if you’re gonna claim it, you better do it, and do it right. How so? Well if you’ve watched the music video you’ll see that regardless of where these girls are going they look great, good is an understatement. So even if it’s just a ‘little kickback’ you know what to do, I’m sure you’ve seen the memes. Because let’s be honest, who’s really telling you what?

There isn’t much to being “Bad and Boujee” it just means being a baddie [attractive], being proud of it, and knowing exactly who and what, if anyone, deserves your attention. Exclusivity. Being exclusive means being Boujee, which signifies the change in spelling from Bougie to Boujee, it’s a luxury, not a title. So say yes to being Bad and Boujee. Step into VIP, as you should, take selfies, as you should, because you are Bad and Boujee and once you’re sure of it, trust me, they KNOW it, as they should.
