The Sleep Crisis: Arianna Huffington’s Revolution

This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

College students know sleep deprivation all too well. Whether you have stayed up studying for an exam, gone out with friends or attended a campus event, we’ve all been there. This lack of sleep has become somewhat normal to us and that’s a real problem.

If you’ve been here…

or experienced this…

then you know how it feels to be sleep deprived.

Arianna Huffington, editor in chief and founder of The Huffington Post, is passionate about the importance of sleep. In Huffington’s new book, The Sleep Revolution, she breaks down the myth that sleep deprivation is an inevitable consequence of success. Huffington also discusses the role that sleep plays in empowering us in our daily lives.

College students often feel that getting less sleep is honorable. In this Huffington Post article discussing the Sleep Revolution College Tour, Huffington raises awareness of the sleep deprivation crisis in colleges across the nation. The tour reaches several universities in Virginia, so be sure to check out the article to avoid missing this opportunity.

Now for the big question: why is getting sleep so important anyway?

In an interview, Huffington explains what happens when we don’t sleep. “To name just a few things we lose, there’s creativity, memory consolidation, our ability to learn and solve problems, our ability to manage stress and anxiety, and a well-functioning immune system.” Huffington emphasizes that sleep deprivation affects our overall health as well as our ability to be productive.

“At the end of the day (literally), being able to do something as natural as going to sleep shouldn’t require chronically medicating ourselves or putting ourselves on a nightly war footing against all the screens, foods, and activities that stand between us and a good night’s sleep,” Huffington explains. “Rather it starts with something as simple as it is profound: asking ourselves what kind of life we want to lead, what we value, what gives our lives meaning.”

Huffington has created “The Sleep Revolution Manifesto” (see below) to help us all pledge to a better night’s sleep.
