Family First: Why It’s Important to Keep Family Close in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Villanova chapter.

The summer before I left for college, I barely thought about how different it would be without having my family around. All I could think about was the freedom I would have if I left, but never what I would miss about home. Coming to school made me realize how much we all learn to rely on our families, and how much of an adjustment it can be to leave those closest to you behind. And although the summer before coming back to school to start my sophomore year seemed like it dragged on forever, now that I’m back I’m realizing how important family really is to a college girl like me.

Family Will Always Be There

While friends can come and go, your family members will always be there for you. Whether you’re in a great mood or picking fights with everyone because you’ve had a long day, your family isn’t going anywhere. You know that you’ll always be forgiven for your mistakes, and that they’ll be there through the good times and the bad. While you go through life meeting new people and having new experiences, you can rely on your family to always be there waiting for you.

They Can Be Your Biggest Support System

No matter what situation I’m going through, I know that I can always rely on my family to talk about it and figure out what to do. They have no problem taking the time to talk to me when I’m having trouble making a decision, and they’re always willing to offer their guidance. It seems that no matter what I’m dealing with, there’s always a family member who has been though something similar and knows exactly what to say to make everything feel okay.

They Can Put Things In Perspective

Being able to call my mom when I’m dealing with something at school is always super helpful. Sometimes, talking to her makes me see that having the perspective of someone removed from the conversation can make a big difference. Being at school puts you in a sort of bubble that makes it hard to get away from any drama you might be facing. Having the ability to talk to someone that’s away from all of that can really calm you down and see a situation in new light.

They Give You Great Memories

Being distanced from your family for a large chunk of the year makes them an even more important part of your life. When you’ve been used to always having them around for all of your life then have to live without them a few steps away, being with them is more special than it ever has been. Some of my best memories from college so far are from when my family has come to visit. Going out to eat, attending football games, and exploring the areas around campus with my family when them come to see me is always fun and exciting.
