Why It’s Okay to Have More Than One Best Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

A best friend is someone you tell everything to. A best friend is someone who will always be there for you and have your back in any situation. All of my life, I’ve grown up thinking that I needed to have one best friend. We live in a world that tells us that we need only one best friend in our life. However, I have three best friends. I don’t favor one over another, and I don’t have a better bond with one over another. I have three people in my life that I have an amazing bond with, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I hate when someone acts like it’s weird that I have more than one best friend. I don’t like to feel weird at the fact that I have three best friends because I love and appreciate them all in the same and different ways.

It’s not weird to have more than one best friend. I have a best friend that I’ve known since elementary school, a best friend that I met in high school and a best friend that I go to college with that I’ve known since middle school. Each of them has their own personalities, but somehow I click with each of them individually. It makes it even better that all of them are really good friends with each other. I’m not going to pick one person in my life to be my best friend just because we live in a world where we’re supposed to have only one best friend. I’m not saying that it’s wrong if someone only has one best friend, but I think people should stop acting like it’s weird if someone has more than one best friend. Personally, I think I’m pretty lucky to have three best friends. I have three people in my life that I genuinely trust and the same goes for them.

I may not have a Gayle King to my Oprah Winfrey or a Monica Gellar to my Rachel Green, but I’m completely fine with it. I mean, come on, I have three different people to tell my stories to, I have all of my future bridesmaids already and I have three people in my life that I know will always be there for me. I feel like the only real problem that I could have in the future is when I need a maid of honor. I remember being a kid and all I wanted was one best friend and now I have three and it’s an amazing feeling. Overall, I think that it’s pretty great that I have three best friends. As long that I’m happy with who I surround myself with then who cares how many people I consider my best friend? The more the merrier right?Photo Credit: Cover, 1
