VCU Campus Resources for Sexual Assault Victims

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

With an encouragement for an increase in sexual assault awareness, it can be hard to know where to seek help. There are many professionals on and around VCU’s campus that provide a non-judgmental atmosphere for victims to find guidance. I think that mental health is important for all students to be able to function, so knowing where they can go and who they can talk to in an emergency eliminates the illusion that victims are alone. Below is a list of resources and organizations near campus to contact for anyone who is a victim of sexual assault:

1. VCU Police

VCU Police will not pressure victims to press charges or pursue a criminal investigation, but they can provide alternative options, such as hotline numbers and medical resources. The VCU Police also implemented a program in 2016 called “You Have Options,” which encourages victims of sexual assault to seek help.

2. The Wellness Resource Center

The Well works to “maximize student success by fostering a healthy campus environment.” For completely non-judgmental health and care, the Well is a safe haven for students that are victims of assault. Not only does the Well help to increase access to student health, but they also specialize in recovery, anxiety/stress management and provide education on sexuality, alcohol and drugs, sleep, nutrition, as well as other programs working to increase mindfulness.

3. University Counseling Service

The UCS offers individual, group and couples psychotherapy that provides students with outlets to resolve issues. UCS strives for short-term, focused treatment and the first 12 sessions are free for VCU students.

4. Medical Treatment

Student Health Services provide PERK exams which are free and don’t require victims to press charges.

St. Mary’s Hospital Forensic Nursing Office – 804-281-8574 (non-emergency number).

VCU Health’s Forensic Nursing Office – 804-628-0623.

5. Hotlines

Hotlines are a free, anonymous way to seek help and get educated. All of the numbers listed below accept calls 24 hours a day.

Greater Richmond Regional Hotline – 804-612-6126.

The Family Violence and Sexual Assault Virginia Hotline – 800-838-8238 or available via text at 804-793-9999.

Virginia LGBTQ Partner Abuse and Sexual Assault Helpline – 866-356-6998.
