A Rant on Overly Expensive Bikinis

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

As summer is quickly approaching, so is the hunt to find the perfect summer bikini to show off your impressive gym grind. Even if you haven’t been gym grinding, every girl wants to find that perfect cute-yet-sexy bikini. While I was searching long and far, I came across a certain theme to the bikini sales world: they’re expensive as sh*t!

I had this epiphany when I was scrolling on Instagram and came across an ad. The ad was for a bikini from the company Marysia Swim. I’m not going to lie, the bikini was really cute, so, a few days later I went to their website and was shocked to see that what looked like a $45 bikini was priced at over $100 for just the top.

Now, I can’t lie, I have bought a few bathing suits for way more than I should have, but I have learned my lesson. I genuinely cannot fathom as to why these bikinis are priced the way they are. Who in their right mind would spend over $300 on one single matching bikini set? What normal person does that? You wear a bikini maybe a few times a year, not all the time. Personally, I think it’s a waste of money, and I think the bathing suit companies are insane if they think anyone other than celebrities who can afford to splurge are going to buy their beach wear.

Another website that I came across that sells overly expensive bikinis was one called Beach Bunny. The bikinis are nice, but still, who is going to pay $250 for a single bikini? After asking this question, again and again, I began to wonder how much it even costs to manufacture these thin pieces of fabric. I did a little research and found that most high-end bikinis and bathing suits cost around $20 to $30 to manufacture and produce. This means that these companies are making a profit of over $100 per piece of the bathing suit, totaling over $200 in profit for some.

These bikinis are cute, but I think I’ll just stick to some cute Target bikinis…
