I’d say I’m a pretty normal college student. I work hard, I try to do well and occasionally I spend a little too much time watching Netflix. One of the things that set my college experience apart from many of my peers is my choice not to drink. The choice not to drink is a personal one and I don’t try to enforce it on others; I also don’t guarantee that I’ll never drink.

The Perks of Not Drinking:

1. Security

I don’t really have to worry a whole lot about the consequences of being caught with alcohol underage. This gives me comfort in the security of my future and current jobs.

2. Health

I’m sure there are multiple health benefits to choosing not to drink, including my liver surviving my college years. For me, one of the health reasons to avoid alcohol is my physical fitness. I’ve been really pushing myself in college to hit the gym and achieve and maintain a healthy weight, so I know I don’t need those extra calories from a weekend of drinking.

3. Control

I like being in control of my body and remembering the choices I make. The thought of trying to piece together a wild night with no idea of what happened terrifies me. I also know that if I’m going to be held responsible for the choices I make (which I will), I want to remember why I thought it was a good idea in the first place.

The Cons of Not Drinking:

1. The “No Way”

People automatically assume I drink anyway. If it comes up in conversation I get some disbelief and the assumption that I’m just saying it for the benefit of whoever may be in earshot.

2. The Social

I’m lucky to have other friends who don’t drink and party frequently so it doesn’t feel quite so lonely to abstain. Sometimes though I think my choice not to drink is misinterpreted as being someone who doesn’t want to go out or doesn’t like to have fun.

3. The Experience

Drinking and partying is a big part of the stereotypical college experience. Sometimes I wonder if I’m missing out. These are the only years where “the college lifestyle” is really appropriate to test out.

Ultimately, I have decided not to drink underage because that is what is best for me. Some people may feel that I need to just lighten up or relax, but I do have a lot of fun and I’ve loved my college experience so far. For those girls out there who may be like me or may be nervous about coming to college and deciding not to drink, I’ve found that most people are pretty cool with and respectful of your choices as long as you respect theirs.
