Lessons from the Class You Don’t Really Like

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

You may be there because you didn’t think it would really be that bad. Maybe you stuck it out because you know it’s a class you just need to finish to get that degree. Whatever your reason may be, at some time or another you have likely found yourself (or will find yourself) in a class that feels like a waste of time. You won’t like every professor, and some classes just don’t seem relevant to you and what you think you need to know. It can be tempting to skip the class, but you might end up missing out on the lesson you’re supposed to be learning.

Lesson 1:

I’ve started to realize that sometimes the most important lesson can be just doing the work. We’ve all had to do things we don’t enjoy and I feel confident that the working world will be just like that. Not every task is enjoyable or feels worthwhile, but likely it is a job someone has to do. If you learn to power through these classes and still find a way to give them your all, I feel confident that your future working self will thank you (and so will your GPA)!

Lesson 2:

One of the things I’ve found that can really make or break a class is the professor. Learning to respect your professor even when you don’t like them or agree with them can be very difficult. It is easy to dismiss a class based off of personal feelings towards the professor. By focusing on remaining respectful you will strengthen your interpersonal skills and have a greater tolerance for dealing with bosses and coworkers who you may not always see eye to eye with.

Lesson 3:

I know I’ve found myself in a class where the class just isn’t meeting my expectations. It can be very frustrating to go into a class expecting to learn something only to find that isn’t at all what you are getting out of it. I’ve realized that sometimes it isn’t about the class meeting my expectations it’s about what I can learn from what I’m given. When I take a more open-minded approach I realize that I’m learning things I never would have expected to learn.

Add/drop week is over and classes are pretty well set for the semester. I am constantly learning and reminding myself to make the most of my time in college. I’ve found that adjusting my perspective when I am frustrated really helps me to ensure I’m getting something out of every class I take.
