Elevator Etiquette

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

The average person takes 1,400 trips on an elevator each year. That’s a lot of time spent in such a confined space, so let’s make things a lot more comfortable for both you and those around you. Here are some of the absolute “no no’s” of elevator behavior — try not to be that person exhibiting bad elevator etiquette

We are people, not sardines.

Let’s not squish 18 people into an elevator made for 12. I don’t know about you, but I hate being so close to someone to the point where I know what they’re thinking.

Stop shouting.

We’ve all been on the elevator at one point or another with someone who’s basically screaming while talking on the phone. News flash: when everyone else around you is staring at you it’s not because they love your outfit, you’re simply too loud.

Unwarranted eye contest.

Is it not weird to have a stare off with a complete stranger?  It’s uncalled for, and now we can never be friends because we totally just judged one another. Here’s a helpful tip: try staring at the floor pattern, your feet, or scroll through your phone — and pray you still have your dignity once you get off.

You had one job.

Your one job was to know what floor you needed. Just know that when you press the wrong button and get off before the number you accidently pressed, leaving everyone else to suffer through an unnecessary stop, they probably hate you now. If you can’t remember, no rush, just think about it first — don’t just hit a random number.

You could have taken the stairs.

We’ve all done it or at least have been pissed at someone else for doing it. To the individuals who take the elevator from the first floor to the second: you are essentially a waste of space and now that’s two minutes out of my life that I will never get back. The stairs are your friend and also a great source of cardio.

Your music is not that great.

Not only is it distasteful, but not everyone on the elevator wants to hear Drake’s emotions. When you blast your music, I can’t hear myself think and that’s a problem. Try being more considerate and turn it down, if not off.

Hit me one more time.

I get it. You’re on your way to class, but I don’t need to be reminded of it every five seconds when you hit me with your book bag that weighs more than a baby elephant. Give your shoulders a much needed rest and put your backpack to the side till you get off.

Talk to them later.

It’s one thing to hold the door open for another passenger, but it’s another thing to hold the door open so that you can catch up with a friend on the other side. Don’t act so surprised to see someone who goes to this school — I mean you are on campus. Say something along the lines of  “let’s catch up later.”

Sincerely,

Someone who has had enough.
