A College Girl’s Guide to Makeup Organization

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

If you, like me, are a recovering makeup junkie, or even still a makeup junkie, then you know the struggles that come with organizing your makeup. I never really have a set “everyday” makeup routine because I have so many different products; I like to use different products on different days. If you do the same, or just need to up your makeup organization, have no fear, because I just came up with the perfect way to organize one’s makeup.

Step 1:

First, go through all of your makeup and make three piles:

  1. Makeup you use very often
  2. Makeup you use once in a while (every week or so)
  3. Makeup you don’t really use all that often, but still want to keep

Step 2:

Now, obtain these three storage components:

  1. A makeup bag(s) (I found the ones above for $40 at Victoria Secret)
  2. Makeup drawers (You can find these at Target, Bed, Bath, and Beyond, etc.)
  3. Medium-sized storage bins (I found mine at Target)

Step 3:

Now, follow my organization matrix

Your Makeup Bag

I have three separate makeup bags:

  1. My face makeup
  2. My eye makeup
  3. My makeup brushes

I like to sort my makeup into three separate bags because I find my items stay much more organized than when I just had one makeup bag for all of my makeup. This way, I can travel with and store my makeup very easily, and not be afraid of my makeup getting broken, opened or anything else. Below are pictures of my three makeup bags and how I store them in my closet.

Your Makeup Drawers

I use makeup drawers to store my makeup that I used every once in a while so that I have easy access to the products but they don’t take up space in my makeup bag. I like to label each drawer “face” or “eyes” to let me know what products are in which drawer. I keep my drawers on either side of my closet, next to my makeup bags, so that I have easy access when I need to find a product. You can find these drawers at most home stores such as Target, Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Macy’s, etc.

Your Storage Bins

For all the makeup you just can’t seem to part ways with, store them in a storage bin for safe keeping. They’re out of the way, but also available for when you need them. I like to keep mine under the skin in the bathroom I get ready in. That way, if for some reason I need to use some product I don’t normally use, I can easily access the bin while doing my makeup.

Lastly, an optional step, I like to use mason jars to hold some of my brushes and lip products. I think they look very cute and are easily accessible.
