5 Fall Essentials for Collegiettes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Nothing completes the fall season better than Halloween, pumpkin spice and of course fashion. It’s very easy to forget about your appearance with midterms happening, but with these five fall fashion staples, you will never miss a beat! These basic pieces offer something for everyone and are something every fashion-conscious woman should own.

1. The Chelsea boot

These are versatile; they can easily be dressed up or down. Some have heels, but the flat boot is a better choice if you’re walking around campus. They look amazing paired with skinny pants or with a dress and tights.

2. The trench coat

Every lady should own one. You’ll stay warm while looking chic! I love when they’re paired with a fitted dress or skirt. Trench coats are a classic and they give off the impression that you know what you’re doing.

3. The infinity scarf

A good accesory can make an entire outfit. The infinity scarf has been around for a while now and it will continue to be. Try to find one with a bold pattern that will compliment the neutral colors that go along with fall. These can be paired with plain t-shirts or chambray button downs, for example. There are so many possibilities!

4. The black skinny jean

We own tons of skinny jeans, but black ones are what you need for fall. They look great whether or not they are distressed. They make a great start to any outfit you’re putting together because they can be worn multiple ways. They can be paired with a printed flat and oversized cardigan for a laid back look or a trench coat and button down for a chic city-girl look.

5. The denim shirt

A denim shirt is another item that can be found almost anywhere and can be worn during any season. You can layer this under a fuzzy white sweater or pair it with leather pants for a Kimye-esque look. The possibilites are endless. I like tying them around my waist or layering them under graphic crewnecks. It’s all up to you!

Currently I am a Sophomore at VCU , pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Fashion Merchandising. I hope to travel to different spots around the world inspiring designers and retailers to be creative and innovative as a trend chaser/forecaster.
