10 Essential Things to Have in Your Dorm

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

One of the most bittersweet feelings is leaving home for your freshman year of college. It can be both sad leaving your family, and exciting because you’re starting a brand new chapter in your life. If you’re moving into a dorm, you’re probably wondering what you should bring with you. So, here’s a list of 10 essential items that you need in your dorm!

1. Mattress Topper

Dorm beds are probably the most uncomfortable things in the world. Invest in a nice mattress topper, and you’ll sleep a lot better at night.

2. Surge Protector

These will keep you and the rest of your dorm a lot safer, and will allow you to plug multiple things in at one time.

3. T.V.

Although you probably won’t be watching much television, it’s nice to have it there on days when you just want to hangout in your room.

4. HDMI Cable

If you like to watch Netflix, YouTube or any other type of video from your computer on your television, these cords come in handy.

5. Pictures from Home

These will allow you to bring a piece of home with you to college.

6. Microwave

Having a microwave will let you heat up those leftovers.

7. Toilet Paper

If your dorm has it’s own bathroom, bring tons of toilet paper because you will go through it fast.

8. Mini Fridge

Even though you will probably have a meal plan, it’s nice to keep some things in your dorm room.

9. Wall Decorations

Without anything on your walls, your room will feel very empty and cold. Add magazine cutouts, photographs and other things to make your room more comfortable.

10. Small Pieces of Furniture from Home

Your dorm will come with furniture, but bringing small pieces of furniture from home will add decoration to your room.
