What to Do When You Have a Skype Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Vanderbilt chapter.

Congratulations- you have an interview! Whether this is for a job or an internship, you should be excited. However, while many of you have learned tips on proper interviewing techniques, you might have more to learn if your upcoming interview is over Skype! Here are some guidelines to help give you the confidence to rock the interview and get your dream job!

Dress Well

You should already have an outfit that perfectly suited for a business occasion. Wear it! Don’t treat this interview with any less respect just because you aren’t meeting your interviewer in person! You should look put-together and professional.

Create a Neutral Background

When you have an interview through Skype, you should be sitting in front of a simplistic, neutral background. Your room might not be the best choice if posters, clutter, etc. will distract your interviewer. Vanderbilt provides plenty of rooms perfect for interview situations. Ask the career center if you can reserve one, or see if you can use a conference room in one of the libraries. The space should be quiet and private- you don’t want to be caught people-watching during your interview!

Understand the Job

This interview standard holds true. In person or through Skype, you should always know the background of the job you are applying for. Your interviewer expects you to understand the comapny and the position you’re interested in. They will probably ask why you’re interested in working with them, and you need to be able to answer this! Do some research the night before to see what the company is all about and whether it’s won awards- anything to show the interviewer you know your stuff.

Don’t Have Personal Distractions

While Skyping, make sure you aren’t distracting yourself. Checking Facebook or chatting on Gmail is a huge no-no. Be sure to center your webcam and video screen so that you can make eye contact with your interviewer. Placing the video in other places could look awkward, because the interviewer may think you’re distracted and looking at something else.

Random Tips

Finally, here are some other pieces of advice. Make sure you’re logged into Skype! Yes, this seems so obvious, but it happens. When you log in, make sure you’re “online” and ready to go! Make sure to thank your interviewer when it’s over and do any other necessary follow-up.

Now get out there and achieve your dream job!
