Falling Asleep in Class (and Other Reasons to Catch More Zzz's)

By Maja Majewski
January 31, 2013 - 2:18pm

8:30, my alarm wakes me. 8:40, it wakes me again, and by 8:50 I am throwing on yoga pants and my oversized sweatshirt because I am going to be late for calculus. I didn’t have much homework last night, but somehow I ended up watching 30 Rock until 2:30 - why do I do this to myself? By the time my architecture class rolls around at 12:10, I am struggling to stay awake. Mind you, my late night was not an isolated event. This is a habit that I have found myself engaging in all semester. I work an office job every day for 3-4 hours, and I find myself getting lazier and grumpier each day, even though I know that I am lucky to have a job that gives me so many hours, allows me to do homework, and pays well....

By Stacey Oswald
January 24, 2013 - 11:25pm

"I'm in love, I'm in love, and I don't care who knows it!!!" --Elf (and also me, regarding the It Girl Closet)  I interviewed Cornelia Buchanan, one of my sorority sisters, a few months ago about her experience with Rent the Runway and her new It Girl Closet program. At the time, I was intrigued, but it wasn't until Christmas break that I decided to take the plunge. I was spending way too much money buying dresses for every event I happened to attend, and even then, I was getting sick of the same old stuff in my closet.  READ MORE

How to Have Fun This Winter Without Gaining Weight!

By Stacey Oswald
December 6, 2012 - 7:45pm

Oh, the winter. It's a season of cold weather and your favorite warm coat, nights in with hot cocoa and Christmas movies, afternoons spent baking and cozying up with your newest chick lit novel. It's a season of love, of whimsy, of gift-giving and thanks-giving. But for many of us, it's also a season of about 5, 10, or 15 extra pounds slowly accumulated from November to mid-March that suddenly hits us when it's almost frat formal season and we have to wear a bikini, like, ASAP.  READ MORE

How to "Keep Calm and Carry On"- Finals Edition

November 30, 2012 - 8:40am

I’m pretty sure every Collegiette has their own personal mantra they use to get them through stressful times. Mine comes from my old pal Teddy Roosevelt: “Do what you can, where you are, with what you have.” This phrase has helped me keep peace of mind in tough times this year, which is a skill I am still trying very hard to master. Dorm Room Thanksgiving

By Maja Majewski
November 16, 2012 - 12:49pm

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for family, food, and football, but often one F is left out - college friends! This year a group of friends and I decided that we would host our own Thanksgiving for our closest friends in our dorm room. Here are some ways we saved money (and elbow grease!). Ask your guests to chip in, and this meal will be an even greater success. While it may not be how grandma makes it, this little menu is full of Thanksgiving favorites with some creative, college-friendly twists. 1. Get smoked turkey from a BBQ place. READ MORE

Northerners vs. Southerners Below the Mason-Dixon Line

As a Chicagoan, I always thought that I’d go to a college on the East Coast with lots of ivy and New England prestige. Surprisingly, I ended up pursuing my secondary education here in the South, and I am not the only one. After being here for only a few short months, I have met countless other students from Chicago. Not only is a massive proportion of the student body from Illinois, but there are also numerous students from Georgia, Florida, New York, and California, to name a few. Even with the diversity, there are definitely some differences between students from the North and from the South.  READ MORE
