It is no shock that some of the most successful people in this world meditate—and not just people who work exclusively in the area of health and wellbeing. People from all industries have discovered this simple yet effective technique in giving your mind a little break each day. As students who spend our days running around with classes, extracurriculars, and other commitments, it is necessary to take a few moments to re-center and recharge. Here are some of the successful celebs who appreciate the importance of slowing down and treating the mind, body, and soul.

Oprah Winfrey—

This goddess of giving has been a proponent of meditation for many years.

“And that way of being ‘still’ with ourselves—coming back to the center—and recognizing that something is more important than you, it’s more important than the work you are doing, brings a kind of energy and an intensity of energy, an intention that we have never had before.”

Sheryl Crow—

Sheryl Crow has been one of the main faces of wellbeing in the music industry, and rightfully so.

“One of the things – the and this comes from someone who was highly self-critical and a type-A personality – that has changed my life is meditating. The simple act of making my brain shut off for 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes at night may not seem like much, but what ends up happening, besides creating space in your day, is your awake posture begins to replicate your meditative posture.”

Hugh Jackman—

The actor celebrates the act of letting go in his meditation practice.

“In meditation, I can let go of everything. I’m not Hugh Jackman. I’m not a dad. I’m not a husband. I’m just dipping into that powerful source that creates everything. I take a little bath in it.”

Russell Brand—

The eclectic and multitalented entertainer has realized the benefits of meditation to his own lifestyle and personal tendencies.

“I’m quite an erratic thinker, quite an adrenalized person. But after meditation, I feel this beautiful serenity and selfless connection. My tendency towards selfishness – I felt that exposed as a superficial and pointless perspective to have.”

Russell Simmons—

The CEO and co-founder of Def Jam has been meditating daily for 15 years.

“As many people as I can teach to meditate, the better. It’s very important, and if everyone did it, it’d be a happier, healthier, less violent world,” he shared with Observer magazine.

Katy Perry—

Perry revealed her daily routine with Marie Claire magazine.

I start the day with Transcendental Meditation. It puts me in the best mood. I wake up and just prop myself up in bed for 20 minutes. It’s the only time my mind gets absolute rest.”

Other mentors for mediation include Madonna, Barbara Walters, Kristen Bell, Clint Eastwood, Nicole Kidman, Kobe Bryant, Eva Mendes, Arianna Huffington, and Jerry Seinfeld.

The new Center for Student Wellbeing offers meditation classes Wednesdays from 9:15-9:45am, Thursdays from 3:15-3:45pm, and a silent meditation on Fridays from 10:00-10:30am.
