Working Women: Meet Her Campus Social Media Editor Rachel Lewis

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Meet Rachel Lewis, one of the Social Media Editors for Her Campus. She is a Bowie, Maryland native who graduated from Elon University in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. Lewis had a double concentration in Creative Writing and Professionals Writing and Rhetoric with a minor in Gender Studies. She ended up leaving the MFA program after a few months and went on to freelance for Glamour, Teen Vogue and HelloGiggles before her current position at Her Campus! Fun facts about her: “I’m always on my phone, I spend most of my time with my kitten, and I recently chopped most of my hair off, ” Lewis told me.

Lewis got her start in social media during her time as an undergraduate at EU. She was required to make a Twitter for class use and she learned that she loved it! ” I came to really enjoy social media as another means of story-telling, so I did my senior project on strategic social media management.” Lewis later ran social media for a club on her campus and earned a few social media internships to gain more experience.

One of the many things Rachel loves about working for Her Campus is the people that she works with.  “My favorite part so far is the people I work with. Everyone is so quick to jump at new opportunities and to try new things, which is helpful in my position since social media platforms change so rapidly.” She says that working for Her Campus is as fun as anyone would think! Lewis credits her co-workers for being passionate, smart and talented, “The best part for me is how much I’ve already learned just by collaborating with my co-workers. “They’re incredibly creative and hardworking, but also so funny and just as quick to g-chat me a meme as they are to ask me to hop on a call to solve a problem.”

Lewis works remotely and says that she absolutely loves it. She enjoys working from home for many reasons, “I also enjoy it because if I have a burst of creativity at 3am, I work at 3am. If I want to work from the beach, I can. As long as you’re responsible and have self control in terms of time management, I definitely recommend it.”

She also has some advice for those looking to get into the field of social media: “You have to love it enough to constantly be reading up on new features, and to be both strategic and creative about finding ways for platforms to work for you instead of struggling to come up with content that really doesn’t do any work just to have something out there. It’s so much fun, but it’s purposeful, too!”
