An Open Letter To My Brother From Another Mother

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Dear brother from another mother,

How did I get stuck with you? You can’t choose your family but you can choose your friends and after the thousandth head lock that you’ve put me in I’m wondering why I chose you. I thought you always needed me but as we get older I realize that it is I who needed you.

It’s all a blur the exact moment we became friends, but let’s assume it was the first time that I became your wing-woman and you realized that having a friend of the opposite sex might be a good idea. The moment you became a shoulder for me to cry on is when I considered us friends but that sounds sappy so let’s just say the first time that I raided your cabinet for all the good food and you let me eat the last of your favorite snack is when we became a dynamic duo, like Jordan and Pippen.

I’m sorry that people often mistake us for being together but to be fair we fight like an old married couple. If you would just listen to me when I tell you things we could avoid those arguments and look like normal friends in public. I’m trying to prepare you for your future wife, so just understand that whatever I say is right and as a man whatever doesn’t sound like something I want to hear makes you wrong. Trust me, you’ll thank me later when you’re in a relationship and married to the woman of your dreams.

Honestly, you’re a pain. You give me headaches. But there will never be a time when I won’t be there for you. As we enter young adulthood and our teenage years are well behind us it is evident that things will change. We won’t talk every day, we’ll be so consumed in schoolwork that we won’t be able to hangout which each other and we’ll have significant others that we give our time to, but you’ll never stop being my brother from another mother. I didn’t always know that I would need a brother in my life, but in my weakest days you reminded me to be stronger and in my hungriest of days you let me eat fries from your plate. I guess what I’m trying to say is, I’m thankful for you.
