How to Make the Best Out of Your College Experience

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Have you ever felt like you were out of place? Like you were away at school letting your college experiences pass you by? Maybe you want to go out and get involved, but you don’t have any friends to accompany you. Well, here are a few tips to help you make the most out of your college experience!

The first step in achieving the best college experience is learning your limits and what you can handle. Make sure you know how to successfully balance your class schedule before you try to add any extracurricular activities to your load. The worst thing you can do is overload yourself and fall behind. Since academics are the most important thing when you’re in college, make sure whatever else you may want to get involved with comes second to your school work.

After you have found a comfortable balance with your schedule, you should find out what your school has to offer. VSU is always hosting events! Meet and greets, interest meetings for various organizations, talent shows and community service events all encourage students to get involved on campus.

By participating in campus events, you can see what VSU has to offer and get an idea of what you may be interested in. Exploring these events also gives you a chance to meet other students who may have the same interests as you!

The next step in helping you achieve the best college experience you can get is actually getting involved with campus organizations or groups. If you are an athlete, try joining a sports team! If you like to sing and dance, audition for a performing arts club!

Whatever it is that you are good at or interested in, go after it and see if it’s the right thing for you. As a bonus, if you are interested in a sorority or fraternity it looks extremely good when they see that you are involved on campus!

Besides getting involved with what you know, try stepping outside your comfort zone. Try to interact with people you wouldn’t normally come in contact with outside of college. It’s great to get acquainted with people from different cultures and parts of the world. This heightens your college experience, broadens your views on the world, and is also a great form of networking.

Networking is extremely important while you’re in college and even when you graduate. It can grant you job opportunities, as well as opportunities to travel to new places. You might be surprised at some of the doors that can be opened by people you’ve met in college!

One of the most important things to do when making sure you have the best college experience possible is having fun! College can be very stressful, so by having fun you are giving yourself a healthy balance. Also, your college years are some of the most important years of your life. You should make the best memories while you’re here!
