Cheers to Spring Cleaning

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Often, when we’re busying ourselves with everyday upkeep of our surroundings, we tend to neglect ourselves. While you’re washing your car, giving your bathroom a good scrub, or even just washing dishes, do you ever stop and think about what you could be doing to tidy yourself up? Chances are, when we think about keeping ourselves up, we think about the physical aspect or hygiene. Well, that’s not all there is to it, folks! Our mental and emotional state may not be obvious to the naked eye, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t need a little TLC.

You can start by a cleanse:

Whether it be rummaging through your social media accounts and deleting any toxic energy or taking a break from social media, in general. Most of us millennials are heavily involved in some type of social media outlet (which is nothing to be ashamed of, so long as you don’t allow it to consume you). Seeing so many peers’ or celebrity’s personal lives can be draining to your own if you let it!

Any updates?

It’s going to sound a little funny, but who better to give updates about yourself than…you? Day by day, week by week, things are changing and for someone who is busy living life and reaching goals, those changes can easily be overlooked. You may as well just sit down and write a list of all major things that you have accomplished and realistic short-term things for you to get done. This will reassure you of your potential and motivate you to unpack those to do list that you never got around to writing down.

Declutter the feels

Some of us are more of the “open book” types than others, and hey—to each his own. In this instance, however, whatever your preference may be, getting your feelings out in the open is nonnegotiable! What may cause ten minutes of discomfort, could allow for ten peaceful days to follow. All because you decided to deal with the feelings instead of push them aside. Write them down, talk them out to yourself, or (my personal favorite) tell it all to someone who will respect them. Organize your thoughts and gather your feelings.

The choice is yours. How, when, and if you choose to do the things aforementioned. Different methods work for different people. Maybe it will take a little tweaking, but I believe that whatever your version of spring cleaning is should be done. There’s no rush—the word “spring” don’t mean a thing (in this particular article) because this type of cleaning can and should be done anytime! And just like any other tidying up that you might do, the work will seem plentiful when you start, but you will be so satisfied with yourself when you’re finished. Do what makes you feel good and what will leave you feeling lighter and a little shinier than before!

My name is Nia which means purpose in Swahili and I am currently finding it and trying to live up to it. I'm a senior at Valdosta State University, my major is Communication Disorders--translation: I am an aspiring Speech-Language Pathologist. Nothing makes me happier than the people I love, affection, a good book, a blank journal, and the beach. I'm sure I left a few things off of the list, but you get the point.
